How much for do you pay for oil change

$18.94 for 5 qrt jug of Mobil 1 10W-30 (Walmart), add that 0.3 qrt from ~$4 stand alone bottle. ~$10 oem filter via mail order from Niello Acura. DIY oil changes are the same as those folks paying full price for regular Penzoil 10 min oil changes on 84' Skylarks.
Question: What is a crush washer?
-john

What is a crush washer?

A soft aluminum washer that goes under the drain bolt. It is replaced when the drain bolt is screwed back into the pan. Trying to reuse the old one will result in a drip leak because the washer has already been "crushed" when the bolt was previously torqued to 33 FT-LB. (Or is it 37 FT-LB?) These come with every Acura / Honda oil filter. If the parts guy forgets to tape one to the oil filter, ask him for one.....they usually have a box of crush washers under the counter.

Go For It

Well i went down to the dealership today and asked how much they would do an oil change for...... i could do my oil change w/ factory filter for less than $25.

Then what's stopping you?

Anyway to put the bolt back on without a torque wrench??? I know on some cars you can screw on the oil filter until the filter surface touches the car and screw it on for another 3/4 turn. Is there anything similiar to that when putting on the drain bolt?

Does the NSX tech have a higher hourly rate than the other mechanics? Probably they usually give oil changes to the new guy making the lowest wage, so it doesn't cost them much. Now for the NSX they have to tie up their highest paid tech for an oil change? just speculatin'

There's nothing special about changing the oil in the NSX.
Drain the old oil, replace the filter, replace with new oil. Done.
Unless you have free oil changes that come with the car, I don't see any reason for paying an "NSX tech" to change it for you.

If I feel like doing it myself, I'll do it.
If I don't, I give it to my mechanic, hand him the supplies and he'll charge me $10 for labor.

My truck is harder, I think they designed it for a monkey to change. You can always tell when a newer Toyota Tacoma has had an oil change, they drip oil from the skid plate afterwards. There is no way to get the filter off without dripping oil down there :(.

A little trick for not dripping oil on those harder-to-change cars. Mold aluminum foil around those skid plates or whatever is the obstacle before draining.

Learned that when changing oil on my old motorcycle.

I change my own oil since I like the satisfaction of knowing it was done right. A tip for preventing spillage of oil on one part of the suspension is to wrap a plastic bag around the aluminum bar that has a bracket screwed on to it supporting a cable. Without the plastic back covering this area, you'd have to remove the braket and wipe everything clean. Makes changing the oil filter very easy and mess free.

After the oil filter has been removed, clean the base where the oil filter gasket makes contact, put a thin coat of oil on the oil filter gasket and install it. Personally, I use a torque wrench with an oil filter cap and extension torquing it to 16 ft. lbs. The drain bolt is torqued to 33 ft. lbs. as previously mentioned.

East Imports (formerly Go Acura) quoted me $37 plus tax. I was told it's more expensive because the NSX filter costs $20.00. Maybe someone should tell dali racing that? :D

I usually pay the dealer around $25 not including my own 5 quarts of Castrol GTX 10W-30. That's pretty cheap considering the standard-of-living in the San Jose Bay Area. I think they do it more out of a courtesy to their customers type of thing rather than to make money. Plus, the EPA looks upon dealers and shops favorably for safely disposing of used oil safely rather than having do-it-yourselfers possibly getting rid of theirs down drains and backyards.

$37 plus tax is a fairly typical dealer price for a conventional oil change. Most dealers are willing to reduce the price if you want to bring your own oil of a kind they don't stock, such as 10W30 synthetic. So if you spend $20 on Mobil 1 and they charge you, say, $32 for the oil change, you're paying around $52 - again, a fairly typical price for a full synthetic oil change that you don't do yourself.

As for the price of the filters, they seem to have gone up recently, probably due to the adverse currency exchange rate these days. For many years, the OEM oil filter listed for $14 and you could get them from discounting places for $10-11. This is the second report of the OEM filter costing $20. It's possible the price has gone up but Dali hasn't had to re-order lately.

One other option that most dealers are happy to oblige with is, you tell their (the dealer's) parts department that you'd like to buy a half dozen oil filters and they'll often be willing to give you 20-30 percent off, given the quantity; and then the service department doesn't mind letting you bring your own filter because you bought it at that dealership.

That's right - blame all of them for the mistakes of a few.

Sure, there are a few bad apples out there. But there are also quite a few terrific dealers - dealers who are knowledgeable about the cars, and charge a fair price for the labor they perform and the parts they supply.

There are also bad customers, too. Every dealer person I have ever met has had stories about customers who screwed them, in one way or another.

No one wants to be blamed for the mistakes of others. I don't think you would like it if I went around saying that all dentists are crooks (or denthieves) because I once went to a dentist that didn't do the best job on my teeth. Judge not, ...

I agree that the mistakes of a few dealers should not be automatically applied to all delaers, but four Acura dealers that I've gone to with my NSX have ripped me off in one way or another. So my experience is that they are "stealerships".

As for your having bad work done by a dentist, you have recourse. Contact your local dental society, every state has one, and tell them what happened. I'm sure that the dentist that did the work will have to answer to someone. Trying to compare medical work to automotive work is out of line, and no one here mentioned, besides yourself, that their dentist blatantly ripped them off. But the good thing about this is that any car shop, or motivated car owner can change their oil and aviod paying outrageous fees.On the otherhand, not every doctor can perform dental treatment, and I gaurantee that you can't DIY.

what is the average for an oil change if you are supercharged?

I have a Basch Supercharger on mine and my dealer says that it will take twice as long to change the oil due to the location of the filter in relationship to the supercharger..

that's $90

am I getting scammed?

Rick

I actually was at the Acura dealership over near Clairemont Mesa Blvd. in San Diego to test drive the TSX over the weekend. While test driving the car I was discussing oil changes with the sales agent. He agreed that the process was no more difficult than any other car and told me that he thinks they do it for the same cost as an RSX. So around $27. Obviously he's not in the service department so I wouldn't consider it a quote but it might be worth going to take a look and see if they're really providing the service at that rate.

My car is not supercharged, but I don't think any part of the blower is anywhere near the filter. Sounds like BS to me.

My routine is simply this: buy in bulk, buy the right tools, and do it yourself. When the process is cheap, fast, and done correctly, it makes the job very satisfying. :D

BTW, using an oil extractor makes the crush washer a non-issue.

I just got in the mail today one of those flyers with service coupons in it from a local Acura stealership, Ed Morse to be specific. An oil change for $19.99 excluding NSX. I don't even have to call because I already know the price is north of $50 from a previous experience with them.

So who here is still saying that stealerships don't charge more for a routine oil chane with the NSX???

Well, you must criticize dealerships because you are a denthief. I guess it takes a thief to recognize another one.

After all, if someone has a problem with one dentist, then all dentists must be thieves, right? So we should call them all crooks and thieves, and invent an insult for all dentists?

That's Cush Acura. They use to charge me 19.99/oil change in the NSX. Now they are charging me $50. I'm sure I can argue with them to charge me 19.99 like they usually did... (show them my old receipts)... but it's not even worth the trouble. We have other places in San Diego to go to for our NSX needs...

I thought you didn't like the TSX? How do you like it now?

Having The Last Word

All right you two - DocL and nsxtasy - stop with the "public one upsmanship". You have a bone to pick with each other on word choice, take it private.

Love, Dear Abby (taking own advice) :)
