How much $$$ do you spend a year for maintenance?

Hi Guys\Girls,

My name is Thuwa (Tua) aka Mty Mous, and I'm from Toronto Canada.

I'm looking to pick up an NSX in the future (within the next year) and I'm trying to do as much research as I can before moving forward with a purchase.

I'm trying to get an idea on how much you guys generally spend on maintenance\preventative maintenance and repairs each year. Just trying to decide how much I should roughly bugdet a year for upkeep. This ofcourse does NOT include modifications, cause we all know that's a whole other story.

I first owned a '91 300ZX TwinTurbo, which I heavily modified (on the engine drivetrain and suspension only) and I think I crossed the line where it ended up being too much for a dependable daily driver.

I then decided I needed something that's a convertible and dependable enough to be a daily driver. So I ended up getting a new '02 Mazda Miata, I've done almost everything except for "power" mods due to the fact that I know it won't have the top end capability of the Z. So I've decided it's time to move on and get the next car I've always wanted to own.

This leads me to the NSX, ... I think I want a NSX-T, but I'm kind of reluctant to let go of the Miata which has required VERY little for repairs and maintenance on an annual basis for something that I don't have any idea how much it'll cost me. So I'm hoping if I can average out what everybody is spending annually on their car, then I'll get a ball park figure in my head.

I know I'll be modding the car, ... but that's totally in a budget of it's own (the kind that the Mrs. doesn't realize). But repairs is what she will be aware of, and she's cool with getting an NSX as long as it doesn't turnout to be as bad as the 300ZX.

Oh and yes, this is my very first post on the board.

Thanks

Thuwa

Welcome on board!

If the car is well maintained... you will be around 3-4000$ every five years (some years are quite cheap, maybe less than 500$, some are expensive - timing belt, hoses, maybe a clutch). This is pure maintenance.

Then you have to add tires and stuff that may break like: windows regulators, sound system parts, windshield strip, door handle, climate control, struts, ... [these may look strange to you but are common failures on older NSXs]

!!! Important: avoid snap ring cars where the problem was not taken care of, that could cost you an additional 3k. !!!

What you spend per year depends on how many miles you drive per year. You will spend a lot more if you drive 25,000 miles per year than if you drive 2,500 miles per year.

You can easily calculate how much it will cost you, based on your driving patterns, as follows:

Scheduled maintenance - Look in the NSX FAQ (answers to Frequently Asked Questions, which you can access by clicking the word FAQ in the first red bar at the top of your screen). Click on Maintenance, then click on Schedule for the schedule, and on Costs for the costs. Add 10-20 percent to the prices shown, since labor rates have generally risen since those figures were posted. Note that services are specified for both mileage and time intervals (e.g. 90K miles or 72 months, whichever comes first.)

Tires - Since rear tires generally last 4-8K miles, and front tires 10-20K, this cost is significant. Decide what kind of tires you'll use, and look up costs from your favorite online tire dealer.

Unscheduled repairs - Assume a clutch replacement every 40K miles (that's somewhat conservative; clutch life varies from 25K to 100K but most fall into a 40-60K lifespan) for USD2500 for a '91-96, USD4000 (I think) for a '97-05. Also assume brake work (replacement of brake pads and/or rotors) averaging USD500 every 20K miles. If you budget another USD1000 every 20K miles for other unexpected repairs, that should be sufficient.

The above figures assume no track time. If you drive your NSX in track events, you will need to replace brake pads much more frequently (and costs for brake rotors and tires will also be higher).

Welcome to NSXprime!

gotta-pay-to-prey...

Three potential pocket-book killers in owning an NSX...

- maint'/service history lacking (as per manufacturer's suggested intervals)

- mods' (ie. GFC, bling, speed-racer, rice, show)

- model-updates (thank god almighty '05 was last year and only three minor changes in model run of which two being what many seek to upgrade)
Ex.
~ T-top -> no can do, unless you know Ice-T's body-shop guy
~ '97+ 3.2L/6spd
~ '02+ front/rear fascia

depends if your NSX is a;
garage queen
or
a daily mean machine....HEHE:biggrin:

Honestly, even as daily driver, if properly taken care of in the past, you should only have to get regular services.

just my .02

maintenance for me in 2004 was $1200 for a/c repair and $1100 for major 90K service. In 2005, $900 for a/c repair.

Guys, ... this is exactly the kind of information I want, ... please keep em coming.

Thanks

No. Please read the FAQ section which was effortlessly put together for this very purpose. From there, please use the search (of-course put in keywords for high-yield threads w/ relevant posts). This was all very articulately stated by nsxstasy.

If you feel then that you still have particular questions that remain unanswered, you are more than welcome to post a relevant thread topic. Otherwise, you'll get alot of posts of situations that aren't indicative of what the maint'/service/repair/upkeep costs are for a NSX. Each and every situation has the potential to be independant of eachother. Instead, seeing a broad range of data will be more beneficial. Also, it'll keep redundant topics from cluttering up the forum.

We sincerely look fwd to having you join the proud, privileged NSX community in the near future. Goodluck!

Costs are definitely starting to mount on my 91. The first 6 or 7 years it was just valve adjustments, tires and oil changes for the most part.

In the past few years it's been timing belt, water pump, spool valves, oil pan gasket, emergency brake cables, brakes, synchros are going, and I have 100K+ on the clutch (no problems yet, knock on wood but you know it's coming). no problems with the rotors yet and they have 100K+ on them as well (but they aren't oem)
