How can I remove the AEM VTEC wires from my OEM harness?

Figured I would ask here before I get frustrated and break something. I had an AEM computer installed in my NSX with the CTSC, and am almost finished removing everything. However, for my OBD-1 NSX, the AEM had a connector that took the VTEC Activation Solenoid connector from the right of the OEM computer and had me attach two wires to two unused pins from the OEM wiring harness.

I am trying to get this out, but can't figure out how to release the two wires. I have pried back the "covers" on the wire-side of the harness (the little hinge pieces).

How do I get the actual wires out? Ideas?

Major TIA to anyone that can help me with this.

Hi there

If your talking about the 2 wires going into the engine harness you need a special tool to release the pins in the connector side. Your AEM should have come with about 30 unused pin clips which you can attach to your wire and plug it in to your AEM wiring harness.

If you cant get the pins out, you can just cut the wires and resplice new wires into them.

It would be the easiest way.

Happy motoring

WHOA!!!! wait a minute! don't cut anything,
the wires can be released without cutting ,just get a small pick or a large saftey pin ,look at the side of the connector that faces the ecu,it has very small plastic tabs which lock the metal pins in place. You have already released the wire side hinged plastic now you just have to gently pry back the ecu side tabs and while holding the tab with your small pick/pin pull out the wire, you may be able to see how these lock tabs work by inspecting an unused hole, good luck

Thanks, guys, going to go and try this now!

Edit : Got one removed, but the first one that I had completely mangled trying to get out - no luck. So 1 rescued, and one cut to save the team (project)> :)

WOHA  !!?!??!!? ... whats so special about cutting wires?

if you dont have the special clip release tool the wires get all ripped out and you would have to tweak with the harness. I rather cut the wire and resplice it than have a tweaked harness.

good luck.

Are you fellows taking about pulling the pins out of an plug to transfer into another connector?

Snap-On does make a nice kit of tools used to release the plastic tabs on harness plugs and connectors (Snap-ON part# TT600- picture below)

(I have one) but I have also used small jewelers screw drivers to move the clips back holding the pins, inside plugs, in order to slide out the individual pins.
I have to do this quite often when swapping out computer harnesses, fuse boxes, relay harnesses etc.. Just did a 07' Highlander complete front harness(over 10' long!) on Friday.

It really is a much nicer job than cutting, splicing, soldering, heat shrink tubing and wrapping it up with wire loom or electrical tape. It's much faster too once you get the hang of it.

We have the same set of tools except from the "knock off company"

for the average users who only needs to take out 2 wires, its easier to cut and dice.

btw how much did that snap on set run?

Love the tools, scared of the prices.

I don't remember what I paid.

They are more expensive but I never regret buying a Snap-On tool.
