Hi All, need some help with buying a Honda in Hawaii. I just got off the phone with a dealer on the Big Island that wanted $2900 (!!!!) over MSRP for a new Element EX AWD w/auto. I would rather buy it here and pay the $1k to ship it, plus reg fees. Does anyone know of a Honda dealer in Hawaii that can be contacted for a reasonable deal?

I'm still deciding on whether or not to take my NSX to the Big Island, no Acura dealer, just Honda. Any other NSX'ers on the Big Island?

Thanks,

George

I lived on Kauai for a few years and bought a few new cars, trucks, and other equipment. I found that I could save MUCH $$$ by making my purchase on the mainland and paying for the boat ride. One deal alone on a FORD F350 I saved $8,500+. This savings even after shipping costs.

Freight charges from Seattle to Honolulu was $800 for one vehicle "on the deck" (2003). Talk with some of the freight consolidators if you need it to go inside of a container.

Good luck.

I bought two of my used cars from the mainland including the NSX. IT is just much cheaper that way. As for new, it also appears to be cheaper for the most part. That is just life in Hawaii. Starting prices are always MSRP or higher since there is little competition. For Honda, we have 3 dealers on Oahu so I really don't know about the other Islands, so you can deal a bit, but you probably need to be here to do it. I thing Pfluegar Honda here in Honolulu, or The Tony Group (They sell Honda, Nissan, VW, and something else all on one large lot). Windard Honda is not to good IMHO. Buy from the mainland and you should do better especially on a used car. When you bring in a used car you don't have to pay Hawaii tax on it when you register it. On new cars you do though.

Hi Chris, thanks for the info. I already spoke with Pfluegar Honda on Oahu and one dealer on the Big Island. Pfluegar wants $300 to deliver it on the Big Island. I just contacted Costco and they may be able to beat them all.

Do you know how many NSX's are in Hawaii? Any on the Big Island? I'd like to talk to owners like yourself on the island to hear about the good and bad on owning one there. Like insurance....

Thanks,

George

There are a lot of NSX owners in Hawaii. Nothing like the mainland, but we do have a bunch. Just this past Sunday we had 8 of us get together. I know there are at least half a dozen more that could have come out but didn't have the time. Then there are a few that we really don't know how they are and they never come out to anything. Maui has a few and I believe Big Island has a few as well. Anyway, insurance is not that bad depending on the year. The older they are the less they are to insure. At least that is how it is with my carrier State Farm. I pay about $1050 a year for full converage, under insured, $500 deductable. Owing an NSX in Hawaii is all good. The only bad thing I can think of is you have limmited road space so we mostly just cruise. Can't really open it up unless you want to go to jail. Also, ordering any aftermarket part will cost you an arm and a leg in shipping since you have to fly in most of the parts. Very few times we can surface ship an item in. Just for reference, a typical body kit (For any car) will cost about $300 in shipping. Servicing could get expensive as well since you more than likey have to go to the dealer becuase we don't really have indpendent shops that work on a car like the NSX. Big Island you have more road space so you could open it up a bit there, but I have no real knowledge on serviving there. Probably have to take it to Acura. Gas is expensive here as well. Oahu is probably the lowest of all Islands and we are paying about $2.50 or a little higher. I wouldn't be surprised if the Big Island is about $2.70 for Premium right now. We haven't seen that nationwide gas price raise yet either.

Glad to hear it's all good owning an "X" in Hawaii. I found out there's no Acura dealer on the Big Island, only a Honda dealer. Their service tech said they can work on an Acura including an NSX. I got an insurance quote and it's not as bad as I thought.

I may be over in Oahu next month, my son's HS golf team was invited to a tournament at Turtle Bay.

Later,

George
