Hi. I'm new to the forum and currently narrowing the field of choices for an NSX. While I am strongly considering an automatic, I worry that the car will lose some of it's 'omphhh!'. Is this the case? My husband says the NSX has enough torque to compensate for the 20 or so less HP. How do the auto-owners feel? Anyway, just wanted to say hi. Hi.

Welcome to the forum

haven't driven the auto but I would think that unless you have to drive an auto, disability etc, why would you with a car like this? There is just something priceless about going through a beautiful gearbox like the NSX's, but I love driving stick even if its just my integra.

Anyway I would drive both and then decide.

Here's my take: It's an individual and subjective thing. While I could never fathom the thought of an auto NSX, I have witnessed the absolute joy one owner has had with his. He absolutely loved driving it. As a passenger riding with him, I'm thinking an auto is just not right in an NSX, yet it bothered him none. In fact, I'm quite sure he preferred it. Will it be less powerful than a manual? Sure it will. But what are you looking to accomplish? That's the magic question. BTW, the NSX is far from a torque monster - don't tell your hubby though!

However, here's my .02 worth of advice: If you haven't driven a manual NSX, and are somehow afraid of it - go drive one if you can. The gear box is one of the finest attributes it has. For even a beginner it would be a wonderful platform to learn in, provided you can understand how to properly use the clutch.

I think the automatics are just as good minus a little bit of power. It's still an NSX. First NSX I drove was an automatic and it was still fast enough to make me totally fall in love with it. The handling is what you will love the most about the car and how low the car sits and its sleek lines.

only cool thing about the auto nsx is that it's more rare. be ready for people asking you why you got an auto though... (i can understand if you plan on driving it in traffic frequently.)

just out of curiosity..... why are you considering the auto? if you plan on romping on it, get ready for some rough shifts later in its life and slow starts all the time (torque converters = )

either way.... car is still awesome, enjoy it - whichever one you get.

Thanks for the input. The only real consideration in favour of an auto' is traffic. But I'm becoming convinced some of the car's character might be lost. As far as it goes, I've attended a 2 day racing course and currently drive a stick so that's no issue. And really, there's not a whole lot of traffic 'round here. Are there even any 97-8 autos to be had? I will just try a search and see...

Since automatics constitute about 9 percent of NSX sales, you will need to keep your search as broad as possible. Looking for specific years or colors, particularly if you restrict yourself to cars north of the border, may make the search for an automatic impossible. Also, keep in mind that the most significant improvements to the '97 and later NSX (larger engine and six-speed transmission) were not made to the automatic cars, so there's little need to look specifically for an NSX in those years.

I'd suggest looking in the US, as it'll be easier to find what you're looking for and you'll probably save some money too. The auto wouldn't be that bad, would it? Can't you shift "F1-style" or something?

There's no traffic in Nova Scotia...

well, good luck on the purchase if it do come through for you. and welcome to the forum.

I just want to say I live in the west chicago suburbs and have always driven stick. There is plenty of traffic around here. The NSX has the best clutch/shifter of any car I have driven so far. So I would not worry too much about it. And for me at least, rowing through the gears is one of the most fun parts of driving a car like this. But in the end, do what makes you happy.......Steve

I would say a C6 automatic would be a good sports car that doesn't lose much of its capabilities as an auto. 6 spd paddle shifters are pretty cool.

However a NSX IMHO should only be bought as a manual. The NSX IMHO loses too much of its "character" when it is an auto. This is based on a comparison of a 4 spd Auto and 5 sp manual. The 6 speed would make the difference even greater.

Ok...It's gonna be a '96 Formula Red (is that the 'new' red?) from California. Here's the link: http://www.nsxprime.com/forums/showthread.php?t=64940. <---Did that work? Well...pc's are not my friend....Thus far, the process has been painless, and Wayne has been extremely forthcoming and helpful through-out. Strangely enough, though this is a sight-unseen purchase, I have every confidence that this will work out very favourably indeed, bolstered in no small part by the seller's accessability and nature. The PPI has been performed and there are no issues (outside of weary trunk struts). I'll have the complete documentation like Moday/Tuesday of next week. I am also contracting an import brokerage to facilitate the border-crossing. What this all means is in about 2 weeks I'll have a rippah NSX!!!! Hugga-dugga!
P.S. is a stick too!
