- Is it anything to be concerned about when the car is in excellect condition? The car seems as if it's been taken care of very well.. but I can not find out if the timin belt or water pump has been changed even with the VIN#... any ideas? The current owner doesnt know if it has been done, and it has 83K miles on it... what to do.... what to do... thanks for the info -Electro

High mileage is not a concern on a Honda.

Change the timing belt anyway. Make sure the car is selling for at least $1500 less than it's value to cover this cost.

Even though this repair should only cost about $1100-1200? (including parts and labor, water pump replacement included)

How can I tell if the timing belt has been changed? I've already tried contacting the Acura Dealer, and giving them the VIN#, and they didnt come up with any records other than the original purchase date and location... is there anything I can do to tell if the timing belt and water pump have been replaced? Thanks -E

If you can't find any record of it being done, I would assume it was not done. You said the dealer you talked to only has records of when it was sold. Obviously they are not the dealer that actually maintained the car. Try to find the dealer who worked on the car.

If the water pump was changed after 1997 it would probably have a slightly different pump design and lower timing belt cover because there was a change in those parts in '97. A mechanic who has experience with this part change should be able to tell the difference by inspecting the lower timing belt cover. Obviously this is not a guarantee the timing belt was changed but it's likely.
