HID or look alikes

I will be dead honost. My friend has a 2001 Audi S4. I am in love with those lights. I looked at other threads on the board and it seems the Philips kit that is out looked more white than blue like my friends audi. Was that just the digital camera or what? I think the lighting is ok compared to a RX7 on lighting but I would like to get that blue look I see on the audi. I have seen that in some Ricer civics in town and I am ashamed to say it but THEY LOOK GOOD! IF I can spend $30 bucs and get that blue tint that is fine. Just currious the options I have. I am really trying to come close to the Audi S4 look. Basically the same as the S200. Speaking of, is there anyway we could get the S2000 HID in a NSX without to much hastle. Sounds like guys were having huge problems before trying to convert audi HID into NSX. But I figure maybe a S2000 HID lights we might be able to work with.

Just wanted to tell you that most, if not all, of those HID look-alike bulbs would actually be worse than an OEM bulb in terms of lighting.

Try PIAA bulbs. They are DOT legal and are the closest you will get without actually buying HID.

Also, I do believe the Autolamps are more of a pure white than blue.

Is it just me or are the pictures that were just posted on the new 2002 NSX look like they have HID's when you come to the photo of the lights close up????

You won't be able to tell if they are HIDs by just looking at the light housing. The way to really know is if you turn on headlights. With the increase in demand for HIDs, I wouldn't doubt if they actually were HIDs.

Also, there has been many discussions regarding the HIDs as well as HID look-alike bulbs. The only difference between the PIAAs and stock bulbs is that they are white, however, they are not as good as the stock bulbs.

I come back now from an installation of PIAA lights on an Impreza WRX (all this done in the underground garage of the company where I work

). I would not say that the lighting is worse than with OEM, at least in the Subaru case. The projected lighting shape on a wall at 15m was much brighter and the visibility improved a lot with the PIAA (furthermore the casted light was really much whiter, no HID results of course, but a good "inbetween white").
It has also to be said that his stock bulbs were 55V and the PIAA were 60V. Anyway the result was good, I think worthy the 60$ he paid for them.

I actually have PIAAs on my NSX because I wanted to have a white beam of light rather than the yellowish beam of light that comes with the stock bulbs. I then brought my car to several places and some mechanics told me that the PIAAs are not as good as the stock bulbs. My initial reaction was, "what are they talking about? these bulbs do look brighter and I do feel I get better visibility!" However, I started to think about whether having white lights cause me to think that they were better than my stock bulbs when they weren't (was it a psychological thing?). I then was talking to a friend who has an A4 and he said the exact same thing the mechanic told me. Stock is better than most if not aftermarket-HID-look-alike bulbs. I then asked, okay, where is the proof???? The bulb claims to emit a light similar to a higher watt bulb than stock, where the proof? Then I found this site:

It kinda reminds me of the time when I got a new muffler for my mitsubishi and I thought the car was faster, when in fact all it did was make my car louder, not faster. It was all in the head.

thanks for the link, interesting article. As wrote above we tested them on a WRX (that has very poor light when stock) and maybe the higher wattage gave us the same lighting we had with the stock bulbs at a lower wattage. This combined with the whiter light (psyco-factor

) impressed us to the point that we bought the superiority of the PIAA...
