I am thinking of changing the exhaust on my 3.0L 1994 NSX, but the screws seem to have rusted beyong removal. Also the back of the bolt seems to be hidden behind the cats heatshields, thus making them unaccessible.

Do I have to remove them?

Take it to a shop!!! Stop being cheap:biggrin:

I spritzed the nuts with PB Blaster and let them sit for a couple days. Then I used an impact gun with a jointed impact socket to get them off. Be careful with penetrants around the O2 sensors though. I planned to replace both of mine anyway.

I got mine off with a breaker bar and PB Blaster. They seem imposible but the will come off. I spayed them the night before the install and then again during the install and they finally came off.It sucks................

I think that the cats have studs in them, not bolts. You won't need to get to the back side.
Something that you might try is:
1. Clean the threads the best you can with a small wire brush.
2. Heat the nuts up with a propane torch or heat gun.
3. Soak the sh-- out of them with your spray penetrating oil.
4. Use a socket held squarely on the nut and then put some muscle into it.
5. Once it breaks loose reverse the direction. Go back and forth to work the lube into the treads. Do this as many times as necessary.
6. Reapply the penetrating oil, this time try to get some on the back side of the nuts.
7. Go drink a beer and let it soak in.
8. Stop drinking beer and get back to work.
9. Did you loosen all of the nuts before you had the first beer?
10. No more beer before the rest of them are loose.
11. Last resort, sharp chisel and hammer. Try not to damage the treads. The nuts split quite easy. Hope that you don't have to do too many this way.
12. Replace all of the nuts. I use some anti-seeze on the threads when I reinstall the nuts. Don't over torque them.
Be sure to wire brush the studs to remove the crud before re-assembly.
I usually have to "let some blood" on jobs like this too.
Have fun.

Cheers for the info mate. I had a go at taking the heatshields off the exhaust. The type R exhaust does not have the resonators, so it looks quite cool and it does not rattle anymore as a few of the bolts had desintegrated. I think I will take the car to a shop ot have a go when I get a chance.
