Help - Im changing my rear brake pads.

I cannot get the piston back into the caliper. It is not budging, Ive been reefing on it with the cap for the brake resevoir off even, and not only can I not get clearance for the new pads, I cant get the caliper in far enough for the old pads either. The parking brake is down. What else do I need to do?

The Ive removed the inner two caliper bolts. The parking brake cable is still attached.

HELP!

You have to twist the piston down into the caliper on the rear ones. That is what the recessed X pattern is for. There is a special tool for this, but I just use the square shaft of a craftsman screwdriver. IIRC, clockwise is the correct direction to get it into the caliper.

Cheers.

ITS ON!!!!

thanks to you MJK and Polar.

For those doing a future search, who like me reach out to PRIME in a time of rear pad pain in their garage without the proper tool, I found that needle nose pliers spread about an inch apart with the tips inserted in the cross hatch and spun clockwise did the trick very well. Get the tool if you have a chance, but if you're stuck, the pliers worked for me.

Yes, I need to buy one of those. I went to Pep boys the other day and they didn't have one though. I guess if I don't find one, pliers will work fine.

I'll second that. This tool is called "universal rear brake caliper tool" or something like that.

My preferred way to use this tool is with an 8" extension on my ratchet (3/8" drive). Push and ratchet (tight, clockwise setting) and it "screws" into the caliper.

Happy wrenching.

I tried to push it back with a C-clamp when I first did the pads. I spent hours, bent the c-clamps (2 of them) and gained about 3 lb of muscle mass in my arms in the process.... I sucesfully got one of them to go all the way, and a quarter inch of getting the 2nd one before learning, dumbounded, that I had to screw it in... Luckily, it still worked.

Never make that mistake again.
