hi everyone im interested in buying this car in toronto,

http://toronto.kijiji.ca/c-cars-vehicles-cars-trucks-1997-Acura-NSX-T-Coupe-W0QQAdIdZ310432241

anyone know anything about it? I think the price is pretty good for this 97 car, I went to see it and the owner said the engine was blown and replaced with a 2002 motor, but has no proof of it, it has O2 sensor problem, check engine light is on and left front ball joint need replace. I test drove it and could not tell much since I never drove a nsx before.
Anyway, let me know what you guys think and if any of you experienced nsx owners have time, maybe could help me go check the car out again together.
thanks.

oh, forgot to add, the owner said the replaced engine only has 20,000km on it, but I do not know if it is true. And I asked if it is 3.2 or 3.0 he does not know.

Couple things I noticed from the pictures..

The ONXY seat were not an option with a Tan Interior, so they had these changed for some reason.

Another, is weather the 2002 engine is from an Auto...it would be down on HP. A Leak down Test @ Acura Oakville should be able to tell the health of the engine. Our Technical Director is the master Tech at this dealership, it might be worth your while to have this done.

Dollars spend on this will save you thousands later.

Looks like it was either a scam or it sold... "The Ad you are looking for is no longer available but we found other ads that may match what you are looking for."

Anyone here the new owner?

Well it isn't a museum piece....I'm not sure where to start.

I had the car looked at by a couple of mechanics. The good news was they felt the car was mechanically sound. There was a bit of luck in that the previous owner misdiagnosed the ball joint issue - there were no problems with the ball joints apparently, but it did need an alignment. The O2 sensor is bad and I haven't gotten that replaced yet. The previous owner put a new clutch, new tires and new brakes on the car which helped keep the post purchase expenses down.

It was confirmed that the engine was from a manual car - as I know that was a question that was asked. It appears that they installed the engine correctly. The throttle is rather touchy or jerky though at low speed. The idle is a touch rough, and I was going to try to clean the throttle body to see if that helps.

The interior was pretty nasty. I spent countless hours cleaning. Nothing major, it just needed some good old fashion elbow grease. Once that was done, I saw some minor things that I would like to fix/replace - coin tray, centre console is scratched, radio buttons are worn etc. The seats have a little bit of wear, but no rips or cracks. However, they are black on a tan interior. Oddly enough, one mechanic said that they checked with Acura and that was how the car was shipped, but I couldn't verify that. I kind of like it, but it isn't for everybody I guess.

As for the exterior, just keep in mind I got the car to drive it, not store it. It has been repainted, not a great job, but it looks ok. Looks like the bumpers and maybe a bit of a panel were painted. The rest of the car looks original. I worked on the swirls and scratches but I have to find some R-77 touch-up to fix some of the chips. I found a guy pretty much down the street from me and bought a brand new front lip from him (mine was missing). I replaced a bunch of broken clips and things that were bothering me. I have to find some of the little rubber stopper bits (one for the hood and one for the trunk).

Performance wise, the car is amazing. It is surprisingly easy to drive. The car lets me know when I have done something stupid without killing me.

I am focusing my efforts and remaining budget on fixing some things. Window fixes have been ordered. Climate control looks like it will have to be sent out to BrianK (works sometimes, other times not so much). Looks like the CCU mode select motor or rather the gearing isn't working (motor moves, but the door doesn't). New antenna ordered (oem doesn't work). Tail light gaskets need to be replaced. Need to replace the floor mats. I did buy some shocks and springs from another Primer, but there have been some issues. See this thread if you are interested. I would love to get some wheels, but they will have to wait a bit.

Sorry, the post is a bit longer than I intended. Thanks for the interest and invite. Oh, forgot to add get membership to the list. ;)

The worst part of owning this car is I don't have the vocabulary to describe what its like owning this car.

sounds like you've got your work cut out for you in regards to restoration, but oh well.. its okay, you've got ALL winter to do it. Each winter I pick a big restoration project to do on the car. Good luck!

After reading your description/problems, it seems to me that you need a mechanic that is familiar with the nsx.

The NSXCC Technical Director is the Master Tech @ Acura of Oakville (they are one of our sponsoring dealer) and members are entitle to discounts on parts and services.

I would suggest that you take the car to Acura of Oakville to get a good looking over, before spending more monies.

I came across this thread again while searching for something and thought I would update it with what I have done to the car thus far. I don't think the list qualifies as a build thread so I didn't think starting a whole new thread was necessary.

When I got it it had:

  • New tires
  • New clutch
  • New brakes
  • Comptech exhaust
  • Comptech headers (which I only just discovered)
So here's the list of things that have been fixed thus far:

  • New front lip spoiler + all the hardware
  • New rubber hood stopper
  • New rubber trunk stoppers
  • New trunk struts
  • New tail light gaskets
  • Replaced front combination light
  • Stripped and Refinished centre console
  • New shift knob - SOS rapid shift knob
  • Repaired CCU/Replaced lightbulbs in the unit - BrianK is awesome
  • Fixed the aspirator fan
  • Repaired hvac mode select motor
  • New O2 sensor
  • New master and slave clutch cylinders - master was leaking, Robert replaced both
  • New CV boots - Robert at Acura of Oakville caught this issue before it became bad (boots were dry)
  • Replaced PS steering rack - this was probably the worst problem - took the guy 6 weeks to source and install
  • Installed Hugo's window fixes
  • Repaired a tear in the rear targa seal
  • Replaced the steering wheel (with OEM)
  • Replaced Rear and Transmission motor mounts with new ones
  • Replaced cracked coolant reservoir with new one
  • Finally fixed the EGR valve/MAP issue I was having - turns out I had a small vacuum leak and one hose was connected wrong.
  • Replaced antenna with Shark II
  • Refinished OEM stereo head unit - nothing fancy but couldn't stand the worn out buttons
  • New floor mats from SOS
  • Installed factory DRL
  • K&N air filter

Except where noted, I did the work myself (with a lot of searching on Prime) so that helped with containing the costs associated with fixing the car up.

What's left to fix:

  • Timing Belt/Water pump/valve adjustment
  • Replace SRS Cable reel - I think it got messed up when the rack was changed so I need one (anyone local got one for sale?)
  • Replace trunk weatherstrip - noticed a small tear or two

As for the Onyx seats with a tan interior, I have now had 4 people tell me the Canadian cars came from the factory this way but I haven't been able to verify that officially.

Some pics - you can see the radio button and peeling of the foil on the centre console. The other pics are of the car washed and polished after I got it.

Thanks for the tip. I refinished the buttons (second pic) and it looks better. The volume knob turned out better than the station select buttons. Good enough for now.

Great! I misunderstood your post with the pictures and didn't fully read your list of upgrades since Tapatalk jumbles bulleted lists all together and makes them hard to digest. I really like the mixed color seat / interior a lot.

If you plan to keep your car for a while, it would be worth getting some new OEM onces since those are often used and worn. They are cheap to replace, and really make the car look 'fresh'.

I have a couple of extra sets new in the wrapper for mine. :)
