Forgive my ignorance, but I would like to better understand my car insurance policy as it applies to HPDE's. I'm hoping I never get in an accident, but you can never be careful enough.

I could obviously get my question answered if I asked my agent, but I'm not comfortable enough with him to even mention that I take my car to the track. I'm afraid of getting dropped by mentioning it.

Hopefully some of you have experience with this jargon and it's implications. Here is a direct quote from my policy:

"Insurance coverage will not apply to loss/damage of a vehicle from any pre-arranged or organized racing, speed or demolition contest, stunting activity, or in practice or preparation for any such contest or activity."

Does a HPDE event fall into this list?

Regards,
Ryan

I'd bet your insurance company would claim that HPDE's do fall in that statement, but I think a case could be argued to the contrary. Question becomes - are you willing to argue your position should you need to file a claim? And more importantly, are you willing to gamble on the outcome based on your argument?

I would also say no but as KGP indicates the legal profession is paid to disagree. No wonder most have issues with most everyday issues.

As generally applied, the answer is no. Most accidents that occur under policies with similar wording have been reimbursed by insurance companies. That does not guarantee that YOUR car will be covered, or that your insurance company won't give you a hard time about it. But in general, they are usually covered.

Because such wording does not exclude coverage of HPDE events, some insurance companies are changing the wording of their policies to indicate that, in addition to wording such as that above, all events which take place on a racetrack are excluded from coverage. In such cases, the answer to your question would (obviously) be yes.

Thanks,
I feel a little bit better. Regardless of the outcome, I enjoy the track too much to stop going to HPDE events. Thanks for your info.
Ryan
