After trying "Xenon Gas-filled bulbs" with a blue tint in my NSX, the connector wiring system on the right side began burning as a result of the high wattage (100W). Has anyone else had a similar experience with high wattage headlight bulbs? What are the best kind to use? I am really unhappy with the factory "yellow" look, and would like a cleaner bluish-white look similar to the Xenon HID system. Does a bulb which produces this look using OEM wattage exist? Or maybe my case was a one of a kind and it is safe to use a higher wattage bulb? Please offer any info you might have. Thanks.

BB, I run Japanese-made superwhite bulbs w/ no prob., lower wattage ones are available from my local speed shop here in VA. Contact cdemotorsports.com to order.

No.

However, there are some bulbs that are slightly whiter and less yellow. But they don't look like true HID lights.

For the record, now in Oct 2002, I bought some bulbs that, at least in higher wattages 80w lows and 100w highs, look the world like bmw xenon. Two people on this thread have reported problems with burning their connectors or warned of wiring harness issues. An electirical genious I know said that the wiring should easily handle the wattage and that clean connectors shouldn't have a problem.
Would like to hear from more people on this.

When you guys talk about bulb wattage, are you referring to the "rated wattage" or the "output wattage?"

Some bulbs are rated at 55w but produce an output wattage of say 95w(or have the look of a 95w bulb?).

Which wattage are you referring to?

Mine are 80w with 100 claimed output lows and either 85 or 100 highs with claimed 130 output. I think claimed output is a rather dubiuos figure unless there is some standard by which bulbs are judged.
Obviously, I don't agree with the comments about not being able to get the HID look although I'm basing my judgement on the BMW and Mercedes etc that I see. Haven't seen HID on NSX but can't imagine why it would be superior to the German factory setups. Teh bulbs I have are called Krypton by are actually a mixture of zenon, halogen and krypton gases.

If you haven't seen the difference - I wouldn't assume it isn't that much better.

You are risking significant expenses to your light housings and electrical systems. You have been warned that there are examples of people toasting there lights. All for a couple hundred bucks?

I have seen both, have the HIDs and they are that much better. The SoS kit is professional, safe, NSX specific, and sure to last much longer then the car.

Please reconsider using the stock bulbs or buying a kit of the fit and quality of the SoS kit as you may really get an expensive lesson if you do not.

No interest in SoS or anything else - just hate to see you have to pay big $$ down the road...

I agree with Nick 100 percent.

I previously tried many different kinds of bulbs - blue bulbs, superwhite bulbs, HID-look bulbs, Xenon-gas bulbs, passed-gas bulbs - and all paled

in comparison with real HID lighting.

Get a real HID kit (and SoS makes the best one for the NSX). You won't regret it and you'll laugh at all the money you wasted on trying those other bulbs, just like I do now.

Same experience burning the wires on the left side with the high wattage Zenons. If you don't go with true HID's, you can try PIAA's super white platinum series. They are very white (no blue), rated 51 watts (safe), and performs like a 100 watt (claimed). Cost about $80.00

The big risk that you have with these aftermarket bulbs (besides possible failure) is the damage they can do to the factory wire harnesses. The wire harnesses are not available separately, and if damaged, they would need to be replaced with a whole new headlight assembly.

Besides having the benefits of "looking good" the ScienceofSpeed HID kits also run cooler than standard halogen bulbs...
