Header install help

I'm installing headers and used the FAQ guide. Everything has gone very well except for two things: Anyone have a suggestion on how to remove the front engine mount bolt. I can't seem to find a way to get enough leverage to loosen it. And, where's the best place to get an OEM O2 sensor for a 1996 (rear exhaust header if it matters)? It looks like whoever had the car before me installed an aftermarket version and spliced the wiring with the connector - plus I can't remove it from the exhaust manifold anyway. Thanks in advance.

FWIW, I could not get the bolt out either and ended up removing the entire support beam and then disconnecting the mount from the engine via the 3 smaller bolts. More work, but you also get more room in there.

Anywhere with a good NSXCA discount ought to be able to set you up with the o2 sensor. Goodson in Dallas is my personal favorites. Niello is another favorite.Sunnyside has a nice online catalog, but the prices are generally higher.

Thanks, yeah I kinda thought that's what I would end up doing.
I called my local Acura dealer and of course he would have to order the o2 sensor. Quoted me $257 which seemed high - I'm to anxious to try it to wait for the part!! By the way, the headers are Science of Speed and they are very nicely constructed.

Agreed. Great weld quality also. Equal length and pretty thick tubes for our V6. Can't wait to test this setup.

Best Regards

The bolt your mention is difficult without an impact gun and some swivel impact sockets and extensions. Removing the three bolts, as described above, and taking the front beam down with the front engine mount attached, is a good alternative.

Also this bolt will have you cursing during reinstallation since the headers are very much in the way:). The nut is very difficult to hold in place when you reinsert that bolt. A wide piece of duct tape to hold the nut in place with a tail so you can pull the tape off once it is installed works well. If you go the route of removing the three bolts this can be avoided. Make sure whichever way you go, you install either the three bolts or the single bolt BEFORE you install any other hardware on the front beam. The mount should have all the bolts started first.

www.oxygensensors.com has 02 sensors that are generic for $60 delivered to your door. These come WITHOUT a connector so if you are handy with electrical stuff(butt splicing wires) you can save quite a bit going this route. You need to know if you need the rear one BEFORE or AFTER the cat. Do you have a Check Engine Light on the dash? What is the code?

On the site they refer to the sensors after the cat as right and left, not front and rear. I beleive the rear would be the right, but call them to be sure.

Here is the link for the 1996 NSX:

https://www.automedicsupply.com/catalog4.php?PHPSESSID=a9d6554432936d5f4a7f85d9d36d2489

You can order the "Universal" one, 250-24200 or the OE one 234-4065, $60 or $100 respecitvely if it is a BEFORE the cat sensor.

If it is the AFTER the cat sensor you can order the "Universal" one, 250-24200 or the OE one 250-24121, $60 or $130 respectively. Again, I am thinking the rear=right, please check with them before ordering:). If you decide to go with the universal model it does not matter they are all the same. The only difference with all these sensors is the cable length/connector end.

For removal of the 02 sensors go to Autozone or the like and get the 02 sensor wrench, worth every penny. I think I paid $9:)

Thanks for the response. FYI I found the OEM type sensors (I'm going to replace both as long as I'm at it) at a site I used in the past. Alloemautoparts.com does not carry everything for all cars, but you would be suprised at what they do have. I even found the bolts and springs for the cat there. I think the OEM type o2 sensors were $127 each. The "generic" one that was previously installed was a much smaller size than the o2 wrench would fit, which I did BTW get at Autozone as you suggested. I'll post my seat of the pants results after I get the sensors in. I'm expecting good things, especially after looking at the stock exhaust manifolds.

Remove the front engine mount bolt with a breaker bar and a 10 or 12 inch (maybe a little longer, its been a while since I last did this) extension heading out the left side. If you look carefully with a flashlight, you can see a straight path from the forward part of the fender to the bolt.

Initially getting it back together is most interesting.

Are you trying to remove it from the drivers side or the passengers side? When I installed mine, I tried to take off the passengers side nut, not realizing the nut was locked. You need to remove the bolt on the drivers side, not the nut on the passengers side.

The headers are in. All I'm waiting for are the o2 sensors which I ordered. Removing the three bolts holding the front mount was very easy - for all the trouble of removing and re-installing the main bolt it's not worth it IMO. Also because the mount has a rubber insert, there is a certain amount of play that works to your advantage when installing the three mount bolts. One other tip - make sure you don't try and shortcut the procedures you find in the FAQ section. I waited until I removed the headers to try and remove the o2 sensors. Bad idea unless you have a large vise to hold them while you remove them. Really, it's a pretty straightforward project that, had I not had to wrestle with the front mount at first, could have been accomplished in about 4-5 hours. Thanks for all the input.
