GT Wings and the track

Hey all,

As I get more and more hooked on tracking my car, my mind is drawn to the idea of a big ass GT wing (or as my friends call them, "F U wings").

Right now I am sorting a NSX-R style wing made by Jetz, which is light and I like the fact it retains the led third light. I also like the idea that it was designed with wind tunnel input (or at least the oem one was). The worse part is the fact it bisects my rear vision.

I have the DF NSXR flat under tray pieces (nose and battery tray, gas tank etc) terminating in a taitec open diffuser. I try to have a completely flat underbody leading to the diffuser and am very happy with stability at speed.

Will something like a Voltex wing help in high speed cornering? I have never owned anything like this before so I am wondering if they are worthwhile or simply a cosmetic thing. Also, how do you go about setting it up? Its adjustments seem daunting.

Any serious comments welcome.

Just to show you I did some searching  I'm including some pis of the wings out there and ones I am considering. I hope this thread will help others in the future... Sources quoted and I hope they don't mind me usin their images ;)

I also had the Taitec wing, but found it to be too clunky (it also felt like a boat anchor at speed):

This Voltex looks like it's on shorter stands:
Voltex - makes a nice difference when cornering over 70mph.

I love the way my Sorcery wing looks and couple with a flat undertary and fins the car is really planted at high speeds. Make sure if you go with Sorcery you order the wing and the deck spoiler as the latter is not included.

Here is a quick picture a mate of mine took the other day:

PM Shad of Driving Ambition fame he should know about functional wings. The FX team and Billy know a thing or two,SOS also has a track car that they have a big wing on.

FWIW, the NSX-R wing is useless for real world use at the track.

It does not provide any meaningful downforce just reduced lift at high speeds, use a properly designed wing from APR:

Or from Sorcery or even the Voltex one.

Make sure that you add a front splitter/vented front hood to balance the handling of your car otherwise your car will succumb to understeer.

GT Wings will add drag for tracks with long sections that are straights, but should more than make up for it by giving you higher cornering speeds in the turns as well as allowing you to get on the gas much earlier on corner exit.

That is good to hear. My "home" track has 23 corners and only 2 long straightaways.

I have a nsxr style vented hood. :)

hey that's my car on your post!!! Finally, somebody paid attention to slowv6.

It's the dark side, once you put it on, you will not go back... it's that good.
I actually like my original one better, it's "phase" the bottom 2 pics (that's built by spoon); a lot less drag than my current sorcery one, the problem is it being quite out dated. The sorcery one is very identical to the Voltex, I suspecting they are just responsible for the base and the bottom trunk mount aero piece.(which IMO, is a terrible fit and finish piece, be aware if you are picky, you might have to do what Kane did, cut it in half and custom "mold" it.)

you will have even better view on most of the GT wing than stock. rear view visibility is better.

Only problem you could encounter is local law enforcement and/or people commenting your car being ricey... I don't care neither.

The rear benefit is like 2slow2speed says, you are more planted at the track out and be able to squeeze the throttle a little earlier and harder; you may also found out a big difference on braking zones as nsx rear tends to get a little unsettle (maybe unique to my local track, which is a 140-65 mph, which happens to be very bumpy there.) The GT wing stablized it in a huge way.

About the terrible fit and finish of the bottom molded aero piece, are you referring to the Voltex or the Phase?

My choice would be the Voltex (type 5) wing because it's bilevel. Evasive motorsports looks to be the only importer of Voltex wings for the NSX at the moment.

BTW- NSX-R wings are nonfunctional (period). But all big GT wings will slightly lower your top speed as well as help in cornering speed (assuming you also have a vented hood).

sorcery

maybe the Voltex one will be better, but can't be sure..

As my pictures suggested, I have a small lip spoiler forever (shineauto) ; I just added the CF R hood this year, without diffusor and duct, I didn't notice any difference in terms of the front end lift.

Dreamer, looks like we have similar setups then (except I'm missing the GT wing):

The R wing is pretty but I want functionality.

Also, how do you go about setting up the wing? Just trial and error??

This is a Voltex wing ordered for a MKIV supra that was then modified to fit the nsx, I remember it from the classifieds. The supports are also not quite straight when looking at the wing dead on.

The Sorcery wing is produced by Voltex, it's the same as the Voltex type V wing - the Voltex type IV wing is the one which was originally developed for the nsx, the type V was developed for the GTR, but Voltex will produce mounts for any application, make their wings in several sizes, from 1600mm-1900mm+, and in several materials, including dry carbon.

The Voltex I have was actually purchased through http://www.esprit.to, it's a 1700mm version with a gurney flap, for improved downforce. Esprit used these on their time attack cars in a few best motoring videos... there is a clip of a white nsx with the type IV wing, and the first video of Esprit's twin turbo nsx (the red one) has this type IV wing.

Here is the touge battle with the white Esprit nsx:

john, just trial and error...
I pretty much set it up at the least attack angle and at this point with stock engine, I already had too much drag, as you can see my rake(at the back) is a lot higher at standing still.

overall I haven't seen any disadvantage yet.
