GT-R is an ugly car (I hate to say it)

We all know looks are subjective, so obviously what appeals to me won't appeal to everyone else.

It isn't just looks that are subjective, its performance, value, hell even price can be subjective. Some think a GTR might be worth $70k, others wouldn't pay more than $40k and so on.

This message from an original owner of a 2001 NSX.
We have a 2012 GT-R on order - and looking forward to our April delivery !
And yes, we still love our NSX.

To me, the GT-R is the ultimate daily driver if you live in the snow belt. I would drive my GT-R daily and learn to do most maintenance myself. The only "upgrade" I would bother with is the interior that seems strait out of the '80s. I compare the GT-R to the RS5, not the R8!

Anybody info on the potential durability of the DCT? Any tranny failures yet? How often do they require you to replace the tranny fluid?

I don't like the looks of the GT-R.
It could float and hover over the ground and I still would not want one.

I'm with you Joe....If I needed to get an all wheel drive tool that looked good I would get the 997 TT

Agree... but I'm not too keen on the looks of the 997 either.

Pure looks = Aston Martin hands down.

THE NSX rear end is ugly IMHO

One has too realize the pure performance of the GT-R to fully appreciate what a FULL packaged the car is. Amazing daily driver and track car all wrapped into one.

DCT trans, turbo, all wheel drive, rear seats and a big trunk. Navi, NICE stereo, bluetooth, seat heaters et et

The steering is telepathic!

I have owned FOUR NSX'S and the GT-R is HANDS down the best drivers car in ALL areas I have owned. I've had Ferrari's, BMW's, AMG's, Lotus's et et et

The NSX is still an amazing car. I am actually negotiating a deal to buy one for my wife as we speak.

For the pure performance junking the looks don't matter.

With that said...I get more attention in my GT-R than my Viper or Ferrari ever did.

To each his/her own for "beauty is in the eye of the beholder".

Certainly there are many out there who do not appreciate the looks of the NSX much as there are many who do not feel the GT-R to be beautiful.

For whatever reason the proportions/angles of the GT-R never appealed to me even when it was depicted in conceptual form years ago.

My first chance to see it in person was the preproduction form at the 2008 Detroit NAIAS. I took many photos of the car on its rotating platform and perhaps it is the case of function dictating form but the heavy creases behind the front fenders as well as the way that the side window slopes down to the rear just burn my retinas. The weird hood "nostrils" seem like they were added to break the monotony of the long flat hood and the gaping maw that is the front fascia I have not liked since Audi first arrived with it. Finally the slabbed off rear end reminds me of a Corvette and I would have chosen a different spoiler without the squiggly uprights. In hindsight, the R34 had a better exterior design to me.

Anyway, here are my photos from 2008:

I'm sure that it is an absolute blast to drive but for all I know perhaps the Pontiac Aztec was as well. We shall never know as the styling of the Pontiac monstrosity will prevent me from ever driving one. Thankfully.

I do know that Nissan IS capable of making some great looking cars as I feel that the original G35 coupe and 350Z were phenomenal in the curb appeal department. If the GT-R had either of their looks along with its performance then I don't think we would even be having this discussion.

However, having owned multiple Nissan products in the past (my wife still drives her Infiniti) I do not need another headache.

I really think that Nissan had a video game in mind when they designed the the GTR. This model and its predecessors handles like a video game, making it fun to drive. It looks very nice in Gran Turismo Prologue and 5 PS3 games and that is where its appeal lies. I, like most of us on the forum, prefer the looks of the NSX, but to make the comparison is just like comparing apples to oranges. A GTR is a GTR, love it or hate it.
Beauty is in the eye of the beerholder.

I'm pretty sure Polyphony Digital designed all the displays, so yeah that might be true.

On another note, can we stop making ad hominem attacks? Stick to the discussion.

This post was clearly started as a discussion of the visual aesthetics of the GT-R's design.

Therefore posts discussing the relative merits/flaws of the GT-R's exterior and interior styling should be appropriate.

IMHO, no point wasting your time trying to convince some folks.

There will always be die hard (Honda/Nissan/Toyota/Porsche/BMW/name your brand) owners who will not change their tune until they themselves are able to find/afford their "next" favorite/chosen car (whatever that car might be).

If anyone is even remotely interested in the GT-R they can easily go over to NAGTROC and read up on the positives and negatives of the car and educate themselves.

BTW: The GT-R does not handle anything like a video game.

This thread is not about brand loyalty nor about what a person can or cannot afford.

The thread is about the styling of a particular car.

Other cars with styling that I do not find appealing
1) Honda Element
2) Jim Glickenhaus' Ferrari P4/5 Competizione
3) Honda Crosstour
4) New Acura TL
5) Infiniti FX
6) Acura ZDX
7) Infiniti G37

I believe that the very title of the original post is an ad hominem attack by your reasoning.

"GT-R is an ugly car (I hate to say it)" is an ad hominem attack???
I wasn't quoting influence82 as an example of an ad hominem. I was referencing some earlier posters.

Attacking an owner's state of residence or personal background as a slight to his argument would qualify, but the thread itself? Nope.

Debate on. Just don't try to debase someone's argument by bringing up their merits.

My apologies. Based on the order of the posts and your comment it didn't make sense.

Perhaps if you had quoted an example in your post then it would have been more clear.

P.S. I have redacted my comment.

Like I mentioned before if anyone is interested in anything related to the GT-R head over to NAGTROC and read up, there is a lot of information available (even information related to the heavy creases behind the front fenders)

There is even a book that you can either buy or borrow from a library that goes over quite a bit of the R35 design as well as the history of the GT-R.

http://www.amazon.com/Nissan-GT-R-L...0360/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1295249493&sr=8-1

There is a lot of information available about the design of the car's exterior/interior (or lack of design per some folks), and why it looks like the way that it does in production form.

At the end of the day either someone likes the car or they don't, there is not much more to it than that.

I like the GT-R.
To me it doesn't look anything like a supercar. It looks more like a G35 than a Ferrari, but the performance makes up for its looks in my eyes.

I'm curious how they'll hold up long term. Nissans are usually very reliable high mileage cars, but with turbo it may changes things? Can they do 300,000 miles? Can they even do 100,000 miles? That's my question.

For me the NSX looks better than the GT-R, but I don't think the GT-R is an ugly car at all, It looks much better in person.

I don't get the whole it "drives/handles like a video games" it doesn't drive anything like one at all, and I play ALOT of video games...

I think a person cried-wolf and then everybody started repeating the term(like the whole no transmission warranty fiasco).

But yeah like what 2slow2speed said go to NAGTROC, its a great community with alot of GT-R info.

but anyways....I would defend the GT-Rs looks just like I would defend the NSX if anyone says "NSX is a slow car(i hate to say it)"...

Man, in white, it even more resembles a land yacht ....... similar to a Chrysler 300.

Not to neg out on your car. This is one persons opinion on looks only which I believe was the purpose of the thread. Technically, it's a great car. Good luck with it.
