fuel/engine oil cleaners?

I've searched the forum for fuel and engine oil cleaner/treatments.

For fuel injector cleaners, the unanimous answer seemed to be from Mark Basch. NSX shouldn't need to have any cleaners used but if used, it should be redline.

However, I didn't see much on oil treatments.
Does anyone have any recommendation about using oil treatments? caveats?

is it safe to use engine oil treatments as a way to wash out sludge and deposit?

Yo!

If you use synthetic oil, you won't get any oil sludge or deposits. If you use premium gas, you normally won't get any fuel system deposits. Switching to both of these now will clear up deposits over time, and quite quickly.

Two things to look into;

1) EXP4 Additives for your gas and oil reduce friction, temp and make horsepower. I have done a bunch of testing with these products and swear by them.

2) Depending on the age of your car you may want to have the injectors cleaned by someone like RC Engineering to ensure a full and proper spray pattern. Go check out the Mods are of my site for info.

Take care,

This stuff works, if used when it is needed (tune up or cleaning the motor.) I used it twice already, and will try it again.

I have heard some VERY impressive reports about the EXP4 additives (the ones that were given to everyone at NSXPO 2003 and last year's NSXPO 2002). Claims that they actually increased power by 10 hp, proven in dyno testing. And that they even improved emissions.

Ed (nsxbuilder) and Eric (DAL Motorsports), perhaps you can fill us in about your experience with their products and what you have found?

I thought the one prefered 7 out of 10 was Techron Concentrate?

I'll talk briefly about my experience just this week with the EXP4 Diesel additive.

These products work, and work better than their direct competitors, like Slick50, STP, Techron, etc. I'm not saying this because EXP4 Additives is a sponsor of our NSX, but because it's a simple fact which we have verified through proper testing on our own.

On the way from Dallas to Daytona Beach this week, we (again) tested the performance of the diesel additive while pulling our transporter. 40 gallons of fuel will drive us for 4 hours at "redline" in 6th gear, and yields about a 250 mile range (for about 6.25 MPG).

Using the additive gives us a 300+ mile range on the same fuel load, yielding at least 7.5 MPG, or a better than 1.25 MPG increase. That increase means we consume 8 less gallons per 300 miles. The national average for diesel fuel is about $1.50 right now, but can be as high as $1.60-1.62 in California and the middle Atlantic states.

At those prices ($1.50/gallon), the 8 gallon fuel savings translates to $12 in fuel savings. For 40 gallons of fuel, we use 1/2 bottle, as recommended by AFS / EXP4. Full retail cost for 1/2 bottle is $5, so we have an instant 140% return on our money, AND we get all the other benefits of using the product, including cleaner engine internals, better lubrication and reduced emissions.

The stuff is just magic. I should also note that we believe in the products so much that we approached EXP4 to sponsor us - not the other way around. They were the first company I called, and we've built up a great relationship.

There is no BS from them, either. Their claims are real and independently verified. I've seen more techno-graphs in their offices that show their products out performing anything else on the market (by a large margin).

This is great info and testament.

As an FYI, the label for the oil additive says not for automatic transimissions or limited slip differentials. I was hoping to put that in my other cars as well ......

I had initially used the product after speaking with Mark Rossow from Advanced Fluid Solutions, the makers of EXP4, at NSXPO 2002 in TX. Talk around the table had asked "Is this just another bottle of snake oil?", so I decided to speak with Mark and get the real story.

Their claims of increased gas mileage, reduced friction and cooler oil temps all have come true. In back to back track tests I noticed engine revs coming up faster out of corners, and 7-8 MPH faster on the straight at BIR, so that means more horsepower.

My 2000+ mile trip home from CA showed 32 MPG average. Coming home 1100 miles from TX last year BEFORE I used the products I was getting 28.

There are no down sides to the products, as they literally pay for themselves AND extend the life of your motor.

The gas additive is $11.54 a bottle online (by the case) and needs to be used at each oil change.

The oil additive is $11.46 and is used one bottle per oil change.

A "Performance Pack" of one each of the oil and gas additives is $29.95 if you want to give the product your own test.

To order, go to www.exp4additives.com and follow the links.

Today I only have one sticker on my car - NSXCA. I may add the EXP4 sticker soon...

I want to hear from everyone about their success!

I love those products in general. They are not cheap, but cost effective.

I was informed by a master mechanic to use only Techron Super Unleaded Gas to rid of any carbon deposits over time in the NSX engine. I was using Unocal 76 before but after my preventive maintenance the mechanic told me to stop using Unocal and start pouring only Chevron. My 2 cents...No he did not own stock in Chevron nor worked for a Chevron affiliate. This was based on his own experience with the gas in his own NSX and rebuilding the engines for other NSX owners.

I currently own a '88 Legend Coupe which has 273K miles on it and it still runs great. I ONLY USE CHEVRON GAS (REGULAR 87) IN IT. The engine is still very quiet. I never do minor or major maintenance, just replacing a few things here and there. I just recently bought a 95 NSX-T and will only use Chevron 91 gas in it.

I honestly dont think if differnt gasoline (given the same octane rating) will make that much difference at all in our NSX. In term of performance..

I know that you "might" experience minor difference (in hp) with highboosted turbo cars.

As for fuel cleaner, from supra tt owners, bg44k additive is one of the best additive to clean up your fuel system. The best method would be RCengineering.. if you dont mind taking off your injectors and have your nsx sitting for weeks.

Remember, everytime you use fuel cleaner, you are killing your sparkplugs. However, NSX is NA, so you probably wont notice as much. As for highboosted car like supra tt, you will notice that your sparkplug start to foul much sooner.

oh shit... i just remembered that in CA, we only get superhigh octane gas of 91.. DAMN.

i might be moving back to sj, and having to deal with 91 in my nsx and supra.. GODDAMN..

feel sorry for my supra... i think they both like 92 better.

I think RC turns around most injectors in 24 hrs, so depending on your abililty to remove and replace, you probably would not even miss a weekend.

According to Honda's specs, the recommended fuel for the NSX is premium unleaded, 91 octane or higher. So 91 should work just fine.

I used to put ONLY Sunoco 94 octane.........till I was on a long trip and there was no Sunoco around! Now I just 93 and I have noticed no difference, except that I have more money!

Just a note:

The owner of Advanced Fluid Solutions, the manufacturers of the EXP4 Additive line recommends using one ounce of their oil additive per quart of MANUAL gearbox oil.

Doing this provides the lubrication benefits of the product in your gearbox which reduces operating temperatures (and thus increases the longevity of the components).

For automatic transmission owners, there is an ATF additive available which provides similar benefits.

So if I read this corretcly Eric:

10 oz of ATF Oil Enhancer (the orange bottle) per engine oil change

1 oz of ATF Oil Enhancer (same bottle) per 1 quart of transmission fluid, and this would apply whether one is using Honda or RedLine transmission oil right?

How often do you change your transmission oil if you track (not race) the car say 6-8 times a year? Once a year, every 15K or 10K?

I have a service appointment tomorrow so this would help. Thanks.

This stuff sounds very good. I would like to hear more opinions and experiences from other NSXers before I put it in my NSX.
