If you use your automatic as a 'special occasion' watch then yes, a winder is the way to go; I daily wear my breitling, so it has never really become an issue (I have had to rewind it once in about 2 yrs).
I recently began acquiring automatic watches but was unsure about the need to keep them wound. I understand that they need to be calibrated/tuned every few years but do they need to be constantly wound if not being used?
Will my automatics be harmed by not keeping them on a winder? I have dozens of watches and wear the automatics maybe twice a month.
They are not very expensive. Check eBay. Decent winders only cost a tiny fraction of your automatic watch. For $100 you can find winders that can do 4 watches.
I bought one from ebay that is leather and holds 4 on the winder and 6-8 on the bottom. It only cost $100-$115 shipped from Canada. Definitely great investment!
I haven't bought a winder....i just bite the bullet and reset when needed. FYI...the cheap winders you get off of ebay probably aren't that reliable. My good friend bought one and the motor went out within 2 months. Kept me from buying one.
