For real? F1 is coming to Austin TX in 2012

..and now we hear of another F1 track to be built in Hoboken/west NY:rolleyes: So is the Austin contingent getting nervous:confused:

Re: Ron Howard to the rescue

His film will get the entire country, not just Texas, pumped up and clamoring for a US F-1. .....................Right. Just like Senna did.

Too bad it's not due out til 2013. :frown: But OTOH, that might get the Austin race back on track for 2016, my originally predicted date.

Now back to our regularly scheduled chaos.

Re: It gets worse

This is an interesting read as to what might be going on

Good stuff. So we know that Tavo has been squeezed out of COTA apparently and is happy to let COTA twist in the wind or get buggered by Bernie. Not good.

Here's one that added a bit more fuel to the fire for me.

Look at all the people coming out of the woodwork in the comments that claim they were curmudgeons too. A little late guys.

But it ain't over. COTA may be posturing. They may cave. Especially since they don't have much time or apparently, leverage.

It's hard to tell what's going on, I guess due to the contract issues our local comptroller isn't releasing the funds that were originally agreed upon. Here in Austin, there is huge controversy over what private institutions are providing and what tax payers are contributing. Austin has historically not been the best steward of tax payer money. We built multi-billion dollar train that essentially no one uses. Our bus/public transport system is extremely currupt and has "lost" millions in the past.

The comptroller announced they aren't releasing the funds until after the first race so the economic impact etc. can be assessed. The problem is F1 nor the city can get their story straight. The track is already under construction so someone is paying for it, but our public officials won't even make it clear who's been paying for it so far (the city isn't supposed to be involved yet).

Re: The salvage job begins..........

It's over for 2012, definitely.

But I still believe that COTA, rolling the dice like any developer in this recession, could go ahead and swallow Bernie's offer for a race starting in 2013. Getting the sanction fee ($35 mill probably) is small potatoes compared to the overall complicated long term contract.

But with Bernie, it's always a yo-yo relationship. Most likely, any deal with the current COTA is dead and the track will sit there in tumbleweeds for years, like so many other malls and $ multi-million projects around the nation. Until a new developer comes in to finish it and sees hope for accepting a Bernie contract offer.

Curmudgeon Central predicted a 2016 race date 18 months ago. Better than nothing, which is what Austin and US F-1 fans have now.
