F1 steering wheels have more technology than a complete Nascar race car

One of the most complex and hi-tech parts of a Formula One car is, believe it or not, the steering wheel! It is also a part that has considerable relevance to modern road car applications of F1 technology. Both Porsche and Ferrari utilise steering wheel gearchange mechanisms on their road cars while Mercedes have recently introduced steering wheel data controls to check on or alter several of the car's functions. These innovations have undoubtedly come through technology first introduced into Formula One. Although the basic steering wheels are made from carbon-fibre for reasons of lightness and strength, the real cost is in the electronic, technical wizardry inside the wheel and the electronic R & D work necessary to write and control the software programs required to operate these various functions.

Amazing that those drivers can monitor all that stuff while still driving the way they do.

they do have a little army of engineers monitoring all this stuff for them in-real time. The pilot's attention is only brought to the most important priorities and everything they do is also monitored and feedback is given back to them in real time from the engineers.

The pic at the top of this thread is dated. Here's some Ferrari wheels from 2002 and 2003. Notice the buttons on the back sides of the wheel, near the top. These are in addition to the up/down shift bridge, and the two clutch paddles.
