F*&%$#ing Window Regulator!

I just bought a 1998 NSX. I noticed the driver's side window hesitates as it rolls up. I took it to the dealer and they tell me that it's the window regulator. They quoted me 1,024 to fix it. That's $550 for the part and the rest for labor. He told me that it takes 5 hours of labor to fix. Sounds like BS to me. What to do??

Most likely, your regulator itself is just fine, but the tracks need to be lubed.

http://www.nsxprime.com/FAQ/Troubleshooting/windows.htm (disregard all the TSB, clip, etc stuff as it does not apply to your car and scroll down to the part about lubing the tracks).

If you want to do it yourself, there's some info here: http://www.nsxprime.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=17946 It should take no more than 1.5 hours (per side) for even a novice mechanic, like myself. Just be careful with the tabs on the door panel and the weatherstripping.

100% agree with Ojas. The fact it rolls up tells me it is most likely NOT the regulator, just needs to be greased properly.

The dealer tells me that the window regulator is damaged and will break soon.
I seriously think that the regulator is fine, and that it just needs to be greased up. Anyone else have input?

could it be a broken clip thingie, and the dealer just assumes that you have to change to entire regulator?

No. The clips break on the '91-93 NSX only. You can see a picture of a new style regulator in the FAQ.

I would take it to another dealer, one that is more experienced working on the NSX...

Is there an easy way to see if you have the new regulators without having to take the door off?

I was told they were fixed in mine, but I honestly have no idea.

I seriously doubt that someone would have installed old 91-93 window regulators on a 98 NSX.

Clean and lube the tracks as mentioned.

The dealer is giving you bad advice.

There are images of the new style regulators around. On the early models there are just two ears that stick up to hold the cable block (plastic). On the new design the two ears are tied together in a entire box structure. Therefore the ears can't break and the plastic cable block is securely captured.

Now the dealer tells me that the labor to lube and reassemble the window is going to be the same as replacing the regulator. He claims that it will take 5 hours to take the window apart, lube it, and put it back together. He is trying to charge me almost $500. What the hell!

No, you have to open up the door panel. (I'm sure you meant to say "take the door panel off" or "open up the door", not "take the door off"... ;) )

Oh my. Look, this is really simple. Stop talking to the damn dealer and start getting to work. It may take a total of 5 hours for YOU to do the work, and that's if you are completely clueless. Do a search on Prime and you will find ~20 different threads explaining how the regulator does not need replaced.

Peel off your inner door garnish by simply unscrewing it. Find the rails. Add lube, slide window, repeat. Reapply door garnish. Proceed to service center, present midle finger, move on.

Why are these dealerships getting so damn greedy? I know the RL isn't selling as well as they like, but damn. Do us a favor. Ask your dealer if they have the new oil filter for the NSX. If they say yes, sock em one for me.

I did both my regulators and it's not that hard at all... go to the Bose Speaker repair in the FAQs it has a picture by picture on how to remove the door panel once that's off it's a piece of cake just take your time.

Do what I'm going to do and take a trip to Nashville, TN! :)

There's no need for him to go that far (675 miles from DC). Heck, he's only 160 miles from the best NSX tech on the East Coast.

My 2000 NSX passenger side window also rolls up but it clicks as if it's rubbing against something on the way up. Pauly Acura in Highland Park, IL told me that I needed a regulator as well. If 1 1998 shouldn't need a regulator, it's unlikely that my 2000 needs one, right? Also, the window always rolls all the way up, it just hits something on the way up.

Any ideas? Thanks.

By the by, since mine is under warranty, they're not making any money off of me for replacing the regulator. They too said that it would take around 4 hours. If I don't need to go through with this, I won't - but it's a little late. I'm supposed to go to the dealership in about 8 hours..... argh.

Okay. I jumped the gun. After reading all of the posts on this thread, I think I just need to grease it. Frankly, I thought it might have had something to do with the speakers that I had installed in the door by the stereo shop. I guess I will find out tomorrow.

The dealer is making money alright. Just not from you, but from Honda.

Since it's under warranty, just let them fix it however they want.

Incidentally, the NSX techs at Pauly should know exactly what's needed. Both Chuck and Craig are very knowledgeable and have been working on NSXs for years.
