expansion valve

Does anyone know about replacing the air conditioning expansion valve without taking off the interior dash board? I was told that some mechanics can access the valve from the front firewall area. If so, would this be behind the blower motor housing? Has anyone have any experience with this proceedure?
 
any pics of this removal?
 
Removal of the blower motor? That i really easy. Disconnect connectors, remove 1 bolt holding the fuse box, pull it away, remove 4 bolts holding blower motor to the firewall and jerk it out. 20 min job. Remove spare tire first if you have it.

In the hole in the firewall you can now see the evaporator with the expansion valve in front of it.

Take a look in the manual.
 
This has been asked and answered to death but if you go to "NSXCB" and do a quick search for it or go to "Kaz-kzukNA1" there, his "refresh" threads will give you everything and more there.

Should I use teflon tape to seal the threads when I do the expansion valve replacement?
 
AC plumbing is normally compression or flare neither which require any type of sealant. The only connections that require sealant would be a tapered pipe connection. You should be able to tell the difference.
 
How "special" is the black "rubber" wrapped around the bulb of the expansion valve?
I can not seem to get the old bulb out without ripping the rubber/urethane?

Additionally, can I reuse the old O-rings. My new expansion valve did not comewith new ones?
If I need new ones, do you know the part #s?
I have a 91NSX that was transitioned to R134a.

I can't help you with oring part# but I strongly recommend oring replacement. A good parts man can normally match up new orings to your old ones.
 
Can I ask you guys how you knew that your expansion valve was bad? Are there symptons? Thanks.

My ac worked like a champ sometimes and didn't sometimes and the lack of cooling was not associated with car movement. Condenser fans were operating.

Finally, my "independent" mechanic (not necessarily an ac expert) said his gauges suggested this during a recharge attempt and for $90 my Acura dealer confirmed it...but I have not fixed it...so its (right now) a best guess.
