excessive smoke and fuel smell from exhaust?

Hi everyone.

I have a 1992 NSX. It has a Comptech exhaust and aftermarket headers (might not be Comptech).I noticed that while warming up the car, there is more smoke than I see on say, my Lexus. There is also a slight fuel smell from the exhaust.

I've had this before with the Supra with the catalytic converter removed. I suspected that maybe the previous owner removed the cats. At my last oil change at the Acura dealer, the technician told me that the car still had the cats when I asked him about it.

So, is this simply a bad catalytic converter or could it be other problems as well? I've searched a bit and noticed that it could also be leaky injectors - something that one of our fellow member is dealing with.

I have an appointment in about a month for major service (thank God for Larry), but I'm not sure if that alone will solve the problem. Before Larry helps me out with this in a month, I'd like to get some ideas on what the cause could be so I can be prepared.

Thanks in advance.

What color is the smoke and how long does it last after you start the car, and does it only do it on a cold start?

The smoke seemed to be white, but it's hard to tell. It's not like a huge puff, but a small stream from the exhaust.

And I tried it again yesterday, but no smoke came out. I don't drive the car on the weekdays because of work, so I guess letting it sit for 5 days or so was the reason for it.

Thanks for your help.

Yup, it's simply the condensation in the pipes burning off. Since it's not siimply plain water but a sulphiric acid solution it's gonna smell funny. Don't inhale too deeply. :)
