Ok guys, My engine is reaching the 170,000 mile point and it looks like its time for an engine rebuild. The only thing is that Im not sure who to get to do the rebuild for me. If anyone here has any experiance with an engine rebuild or with a particular shop, please give me your feed back. Id like to get the best quality for my money.

My engine is still running very strong but it has a few leaks here and there, and a few over there, and a couple under here, you get my point. Its been running a 125 shot NO2 for about 120,000 of those miles.

Thanks in advance guys for any and all info. And I did do a search and found a lot of great info, just wanted to get all possible angles covered.

:D :D :D

MasterP'... hola amigo!

if this engine-rebuild was something i'd have to deal w/, this is what i would do:

- tally up an estimate of the work to be done on the current motor

- shop around for an used NSX NA3.0 motor, which lately have been going for 3k'ish

- perhaps use that newly acquired motor in the NSX while you send out your current motor for it's service. the newly acquired motor would keep you in your NSX, and you can still more than likely get all the money back for it when you sell it later (following the return of your original motor)

- contact David on 'Prime (Austin), he's a turbo pioneer w/ the NSX and lately has been fixing to re-build NSX motors for maximal NA power. he has many, many contacts. this is an excellent time to 'build-up' your motor as the costs will be almost identical to a re-build.

- *cough* Factor X (NA-build) *cough*

hope all works out bro'. =)

In case you can't find somebody to do it, and you don't mind bringing it to So. FL, I recommend my friend Mike at MCA Motorsports (305-251-5095).

Seen a couple he's built, and I must say he knows what he's doing. Good luck with the rebuild. :)

Maybe i'm missing something here. Why are you considering a rebuild? Are you burning oil or blowing smoke? A few leaks here and there doesn't constitute a complete rebuild.

A leak down test might be helpful to make a proper decision. Now if you absolutely need a rebuild then I would consider doing your research and deciding if you want to build it up with turbo or sc, then consider going with a lower compression ratio.

good luck

I had a tech look at the engine and he said that there area ALOT of leaks. Im not burning oil but it is dripping onto the exhaust manifold and smoking throught he vent. :( I hate that! Beings how the engine has 160XXX + I would like to go ahead and do a rebuild for piece of mind. What do you guys think is a good price for a rebuild? What would you pay? Im also looking at buying a used 3.0L with low miles as an alternative.

Thanks for all info guys!

Depends on what you plan on replacing internally, if anything. The piston/rod combo runs abour $1k each!
I have a contact that is a Master NSX tech that would be happy to do it.

Rebuilds are a pain in the ass. Just buy a low mileage motor and drop it in.

Only rebuild if you are going all out like a factor X turbo or something...they'd probably give you a core credit if you trade in your motor too. Rebuilds always cost more and take longer than you plan.

One problem with buying a used motor is you don't know the true history of it. Rebuilds don't always cost more but may take longer than you plan. Advantage being you have something 'all new' and will be good for a long period of time. Used you don't know.

Thanks for all info guys!

If you're interested, we have a complete very well maintained 60k mile 3.0L out of a car we recently parted available in the for-sale area.

Your valve covers are likely leaking if oil is dripping on to the manifolds. If the engine is healthy, you can likely get by with a tune up and new gasket sets.

Cheers,
