Engine light on with my '00

Just my luck - driving home tonight, my engine light flashed a few times and went on - bright as can be. I was driving fairly hard (street driving) - it came on between gear shifts. Oil, temp and everything was just fine.

I EMailed Mark Basch (Mark if you read this, call me!), so I hope he can help me out as soon as he gets back into the office, but I wanted to ask if anyone else with a Supercharger setup (headers, intake exhaust) on a '00 or post '97 model has had this problem.

If I recall, there is a way for me to get the error code without hooking the computer up, correct? I'll browse the FAQ, but if anyone knows offhand, that would be great.

Of course this has to happen on the holiday - so much for driving the car around this weekend

hi david,

i've got a '00 with a ct/sc on it - everything else is stock. i've had engine light(s) wink and then remain illuminated several times under very heavy acceleration. the first couple of times i broke into a sweat, pulled over and called the local acura shop to figure out what to do. their solution? let it sit for a few minutes and fire it up.

turns out that's been a good solution for me... when it happens now, i check all the gauges to make sure everything else is w/in normal range, shut it down for a few moments and re-start. never a problem. last time it was in they reset the codes and that's been that. acura checked with ct who said i needed their extra goodies (headers, exhaust, etc), at 3K, i passed on it but spoke with mark basch who didn't see the need either.

let us know what you find out.

Well, I turned it on this morning and the light is still on, so it looks like I need to diagnose the blinks to find out what code has been activated. Wish me luck!

OK, I got the error codes. Problem is that I can't find anything in the manual about troubleshooting Error codes, and I don't have a 'shop' manual.

The codes seem pretty progressive.

Here's what it does
7 Long Blinks, 1 Short
7L 2S
7L 3S
7L 4S
7L 5S
7L 6S

And that's it - repeats. Can anyone help me decipher this code?

Thanks!

David

Those codes indicate a misfire on all cylinders (71 = cyl 1, 72 = cyl 2, etc.)

Since it started on all 6 at once, it's probably not just a maintenance item like valve clearance or plugs. Possibly fuel injection or ignition related. Maybe just a bad voltage sensor?

I'd defer to Master Basch on this one! Please post what you find out.

Had the same problem a while back. Check Engine and TCS light stuck on.

Stopped in to see Shad at Comptech. He ran code check and found what Lud explained (mis-fire of cylinders). Only apperared that way...car ran fine.

Shad replaced a little device that sits next to the alternator. Has a din-plug on each side and is held in place by two 10mm bolts (it's black and silver, take a look).

The unit measures resistance at the spark plugs?? Not sure what all it does.

Unit costs ~$500.00.

That fixed the problem.

This is a new car that's less than 1 year old though - I'd think something like that would be covered under warranty...

Well, I'll talk with Master Mark tomorrow and figure out what's going on - I need to take care of it ASAP since I won't drive the car until then...

Thanks to all who helped - I'll let everyone know the results!

I had exactly the same problem with my '00 NSX-T with Comptech S/C. It happened a few days after installation, under hard accelaration. I checked the code to see what the error was and it was the same a misfire on all cylinders.

I called Comptech and they said they had never heard of this problem, but after searching through the archives I found a couple of other instances. Mine went off in a few days and hasn't stayed on since. It did flash once but didn't stay on. If you find a solution I would be very interested to hear what it is. I don't believe it is anything too serious though.

Since your car is so new, try this and see if it corrects the problem.

Undo the negative side of the battery for about 10 minutes, then reconnect it and drive around for about 10 minutes. If the light comes back on, it is usually a Oxygen censor or like, which has to do with the Smog crap, (AKA Emmision Contro) on the car!

Check your gas cap! If it's loose or not on, then that is your culprit. Most cars now will do this. It happens all the time. You wouldn't believe how many times per week we get calls into our service lanes for this. Just a shot, but take a look.

Not a problem with the gas cap - I'll try disconnecting the negative on the battery tomorrow and see if that resets things - I'll also talk to Master Mark and see what he has to say as well.

Thanks for all of the feedback!

It is not an O2 sensor-related problem. The code is generated by a different sensor.

There is no need to disconnect the battery. Just pull the clock fuse for a few minutes and it will clear the codes.

Just pull the clock fuse for a few minutes and it will clear the codes.

It will also clear the clock time and the presets on the radio, so you might want to make a note about the presets before you pull the fuse.

Well, I took my car into Mark today, and the problem is that my fuel mixture is running just a fraction of a bit too rich. Easy to fix, and not serious. I'm going to drop my car off to Mark next week so he can take care of it.

Big thanks to Mark Basch for taking time out of his busy day to take an unscheduled car, hook the computer up and diagnose the problem!

Lud - do you know what code 66 is? I'm getting intermittent engine light coming on on startup ... switch off and restart engine and goes away eventually! Checked the service code and it's coming up with 66 ... but this ain't in the 91 Service Shop Manual - but mine is a 97 T top - 6 speed. Is there anywhere I can find ALL the codes?
Cheers
Paul
