Engine heating up at idle

On my 95 the engine water heats up if you idle for about 10 minutes or so. I found out the electric radiator fan does not come on. All the fuses are good and the fan works when I put 12 volts to it. What do you guys think the problem is? It runs cool when I`m running it hard. Thanks Mike

Where is you gauge reading, do you mean it overheats when you say "heats up when idling for 10 minutes"?

Are you sure fuse 31 in the main fuse box good.
It could be the temp sensor is bad or the fan control could be bad or the fan relays could be bad.

My temp gauge goes up to the red and coolant comes out of the overflow. Not much but some. This happened today when I was doing a smog certification in CA

You have at least 2 temperature controls: One for the fan (should switch it on at about 85 degrees Celsius), one for the water cycle. Maybe one of them is bad.

If you run the car only in hot conditions (track) you can overrun the temperature control for the water cycle so it's pumped all the time (done that).

Be sure to have the right amount of anti-freezing fluid in your cooling water (not more than 10% in the summer) - if you have too much of it the water gets hotter.

did you just changed your coolant comletely? if you did, did you bleed the system? one bubble can cause your car to overheat.

how bout you thermostat? how many miles you got on the car? did you check the relay for the fan?

Hi MIke,

Go to the online service manual and start at page 23-112. It gives a complete description of the system. You have relays, cooling fan controller, cooling fan resistor, temp sensor(at engine)

There is a troublesooting chart on 32-117 that shows symptom vs. probable cause. On this one you will have to "peel the artichoke" :)

I noticed there is a "lo" and "hi" relay, easy to swap them.

heat

i had a similar problem and after testing the thermostat, fans, installing a new radiator, etc... mark basch asked me to test the radiator cap for pressure. sure enough the cap was faulty causing coolant to leak thus resulting in constant overheating at idle. i ran fine while moving because of pressure flowing the limited coolant and the air flow. might want to check it out. may be a long shot but worth the simple test at any qualified shop. a $3 or so fix too. :)

good luck

Its funny you posted this. I'm having the same exact problem on my 95 also. I havent had any free time to work on it.If you find the cure please let me know
Thanks

Hey Paul, I know what the problem is. My fan does not automatically turn on when I`m at idle with temperature rising. When I bypass the system and run the fan with a 12 volt jumper the temp goes way down. Or if I get the car moving the temp goes down. The problem is in the relays or sensor. Still trying to figure it out.

As I just mentioned in another thread, my own '95's fan relay was zorched and had to be replaced.

Take it to Acura and tell them what's happening. They can test that pretty easily. Seems to me it wasn't much money.
