Engine failure on a 2017 Grrr

If you have warranty I think there's nothing to worry about but those without warranty should purchase some form of aftermarket warranty since the engine is so expensive. It maybe pure speculation but at one point more than 5 used Nc1 engines were available on ebay which have since dissapeared meaning people have been replacing engines we just dont know for what circumstances they are being replaced. That combined with the fact that acura parts websites do not show the nc1 engine short or longblocks available for purchases makes me wonder if pmc is holding all inventory to fulfill racing program and warranty cases first.

I don’t understand your reasoning that the ones for sale disappeared because they need new engines?
Maybe they were sold instead?

Yes, Im thinking the used ebay motors were bought to repair cars that weren't under warranty or had warranty that was voided because any car under warranty would have had a new crate motor come from pmc instead.

So people or pmc are buying up used nc1 for parts to replace engines for other nc1?
can look at the carfax to see where they went if a new owner registered them if not then maybe you theory is possible.

Think I’ll be staying stock. Had a modified GTR that was fast but frustrating. Gradually blew it up. Rod and clutch. I run all seasons and drive busy roads, so it would only be project / ego anyway. Kinda pissed me off when a supercharged ram truck was hanging with me on straight line though. And impressive.

They were around 8 to 15k depending how complete. Bare long blocks were around 8-9k and complete accesories like oil tanks and turbo were closer ro 15k-20k. At one point they had a few with transmissions still attached for around 36k to 40k .

There are a couple on eBay now. ~$7.5k and regularly dropping in price. Interesting to note that there are very few differences in part numbers from 2017 to 2021 as they relate to the JNC1. Differences I could find were the VTC oil control solenoid valves, transmission synchro sleeve/hub, and secondary fuel pump/sender (which is a known point of failure in early models). It would seem that whatever modes of failure the earlier engines have succumbed to were either isolated incidents or maintenance related, or all JNC1's are at risk for the same failures.

Also how "common" is this?Science of Speed stated they have already done a motor swap from catastrophic engine failure for a customer and the dealership today stated there have been 10 different NSX's this year that have gone to numerous dealerships so far that have had engine issues all with the same symptoms.. 😔
WHAT? This is the first time I am hearing about 10 NSX's with engine issues. Dealers will cay anything, so im not sure how credible this information is.

For a power plant that has undergone a decade of development and also in nearly identical form competes in professional motorsports, I am doubtful it is failing with noteworthy frequency. I would however like to know more about the common modes of failure, should that information become available.

Guys I have a 2017 Acura NSX with 59k miles on it.. She has always had oil changes done at the local Acura dealership... I have owned the car for 3 years now and had no issues other than a leaking left axle.. There has been no modifications done to the car. After driving it the other day it sounded like a big clunk came from the rear of my car and all ignition lights came on, it would not even let me go in electric mode. It got towed to the dealership and they have looked at it for the last week and have told me the engine has seized!!!!! WTH !!!! Where do I stand with Acura on this?? The car does have a prior rebuilt title from a small front end collisions 5 years ago when she had 11k mile on it and way before my time.. I just don't understand why a NSX with plenty of oil and regular service would have catastrophic engine failure.. I'm really sad right now
Please help on any advise
Regards
Stuart

Hello Stuart, sorry the hear about engine failure. Any news what realy happend to the engine ? Did you get a used one ?
Rebuilding these engines doesn't pay because just one head cost around 40K.

Hello sorry about being MIA I have been super busy with work.. Unfortunately the car has just sat in my garage for the past 5 months since this has happened.. The car has no warranty.. I have spoke to Honda of America and they seemed like they were willing to do something until they got the vin which was flagged for a prior accident even though minor and over 6 years ago, they seemed like they washed their hands of any help (even though I suspect they know of something about these failures from the way lady spoke to me on the phone)
PMC seemed not interested either even buying the motor they seemed like they only want to deal with the dealership. So at this point i am paying $1300 a month for a car to sit in my garage and look pretty. Not going to lie it's kind or heartbreaking but we survived back to back hurricanes and had no house damage and with everything else going on in the world I feel selfish for complaining to anyone about this situation honestly..
At this point i don't know if I should just sell the car the way she is and move on.. or if there's a shop that car help me with this matter. I feel like a rebuild would not be worth it but need to find an engine to swap into place but that also comes at a heavy cost and who knows the history of that engine.... I have never felt like any of my prior NSX's or Acura has let me down until this point..

I think putting a used engine in and selling her off maybe the best way to recoup what you can. The car not running would be a difficult sell and you'd take a big price hit. I don't think this car can be a keeper without factory warranty. The drivetrain parts are just too expensive new and Acura seems to have moved on from supporting this platform . I think you should reach out to science of speed or comptech to see if they can facilitate a used engine swap so you could atleast sell the car and move on.

I agree maybe you and Chris W can make a mutually agreeable deal.
