Engine cooling rod???

Anyone know anything about a rod that goes through the "center" of the NSX engine that runs coolant. I've had a small coolant leak for months and have taken my '92 to the local Acura dealer 5 times and each time they have tried to fix the leak with no luck. (New clamps, hoses, ect)

Now, they said it's the O-rings at both ends of a rod that goes through the center of the engine with coolant.... and while replacing these O-rings they said the rod is falling apart and has to be replaced. Of course costing $500-600. Anyone know about this rod??? They also said it is not available here in the USA and may have to be ordered from Japan (?????)

Thanks!!

In the bottom of the V, under the intake, there is indeed a simple metal pipe about 1 ½ inches in diameter which is sealed at each end by O-rings, and that is a possible place for a leak. What I’m surprised to hear is that the pipe itself is corroded to the point of being replaced, and even more so by the price. If they are saying $500 for the part alone then I would double check that because I can’t imagine it being for the $50 or so. You might find a good used one at Basch Acura or someplace like Erz.

The part number is 19505-PR7-A00. Call another dealer and check the price.

What suprises me is that in 5 tries the dealer has not been able to resolve the problem. I wonder if there is an inexperience mechanic working on it because usually when a mechanic works on a particular car, he is responsible for any re-fixes.

Maybe time to find another place to work on your car.

Good Luck

I went by the Acura dealer today and yes the part is the one mentioned above. It is rusted and corroded at the ends where the O-rings connect. They say it's been critically backordered and may have to be "made" in Japan.

SJS - Please let me know how to contact these places so I can see if they have one-Thanks!!

MSRPfor this pipe is $80. I would think the price you were quoted includes the labor and other additional gaskets required. Page 10-10 in the on-line service manual shows this pretty well.

I have not done this job, but looks like you need to remove the thermostat housing, under the throttle body and it MAY slip out. My concern would be the small bolt flange that the knock sensor bracket is mounted on, if this is in the way, the intake manifold will have to be removed also.

It's a bunch of work for sure:). $500 total, probably not too unreasonable.

I think Larry’s got it correct.

Unless there is some magic way that I don't know about, the intake and related hoopla has to come off to replace the pipe. Big PITA.

This is the first time I’ve ever heard of this pipe leaking or corroding.

coolant transfer tube

Some simple information to hopefully put your mind at-ease. This coolant transfer tube leak is common on Honda V-6's, and the usual cause of the leak is corrosion of the tube, and then the o-rings can no longer seal the tube to the other housings. It is showing up even on newer Odyssey vans, Pilots and Accord V-6's. Hope this helps, and the replacement parts don't appear to be manufactured any differently than the originals.

I feel like I'm the first with an NSX to have this problem...especially when they (Acura) say there is no new replacement part in the entire USA.

I have this fear it will take 6+ months to make this pipe over in Japan. AHHHHH!!!

I'm already having NSX withdraws, since this is my daily driver and I've been without it for 10 days. Basch Acura is looking for a used one. Anyone who can find one for me will be eternally in my prayers/heart!!
Thanks
