Hi, I was wiring my v-1 and I dropped a screw in the air vent right under the windshield. I've tried to get it out with the extended magnet stick but no luck. Now the screw rolls around from one side to the other every time I make a hard turn :frown:. Does anyone know how I can access the vent under the windshield, or if you have any suggestions on how I may be able to get the screw out? I've tried taking out the glove compartment and I couldn't get there. I really don't want to remove the whole dash board, something else may come lose as I am not a very good at putting things back together.

Thanks!

I've tried to leave the magnet stick in the vent and turn hard so the screw rolls over to the magnet....wasn's successful. Maybe I will try the string/magnet next.

I would use something with a large sticky surface area. Maybe a glob of silly putty on a string. Maybe even a wad of cheese cloth in the corner may catch it.

Good luck.

Get a several foot length of beaded chain (the kind used for ceiling fan pulls). Attach a small, strong magnet to one end of the chain. Feed the magnet into the vent. The beaded chain & magnet combo will naturally flow into the various recesses of the ventway and with any luck you'll quickly retrieve the screw.

BAD PUN COMING

You're screwed... sorry, couldn't resist.

Perhaps you could get a strong magnet on a length of string, guide it into the vent, tie off the string, and take some 'hard turns', after which the screw would be attached to the magnet? Seems like it might be worth a try prior to ripping everything apart, just make sure your magnet is tied off with a secure knot, lest you start a collection of items in your defroster vent ;)

I am going to try all of your suggestions...yeah, including flipping the car:rolleyes: will let you know what happens. Thanks.

Okay, I've tried to tie a strong magnet on a length of string, and took some 'hard turns'...the magnet get attached to the wall of the vent and I never got the screw out. However, I don't hear the screw rolling any more  I think maybe it flew into a corner got stuck, or it might have roll into another section of the vent...whatever it may be, its not rolling around any more!! Thanks everyone.
