Double DIN video head unit thread

im planning on using the sos bracket.

so will i be ok using screens smaller than 7"?

if thats the case, what is considered by nsxprime as the "best" screen less than 7" that has navi, dvd, ipod?

my screen is a 6.1". Its not really the screen thats the problem but the entire structure of the double din unit itself, its precise placement and the fact that the ashtray door hits upon opening. If you trim down the door as done above somewhere in this thread you can get it to work.

Thanks to all the contributors on this thread, I found it very helpful with my questions & install

My Kenwood DNX8120 fits great WITH a functioning ashtray.

My installer, Advanced Car Creations of Garden Grove, did a great job. I used SOS's center console (I picked it up myself from Downforce), SoS's bracket, the Proformance Audiophile Stage 2 speaks/amp, and even did a stealth install of the V1 the same time, with the DNX8120's usb plug and the V1 remote speaker unit mounted in the ashtray side on a custom plate. Oh, and I had Advanced paint the console and door escutcheons Sebring Silver to match the car.
The guys mounted the head unit as high as possible and shaved 1/16 inch off the top of the ashtray door to let it move smoothly. Bluetooth phone mic mounted on top of driver's A-pillar; GPs antenna mounted under the dash ( full signal bars 360 deg ), and the XM antenna with NavTraffic- which is super accurate and timely in adding estimated delays into the integrated GPS- mounted under the engine cover). I'm VERY happy with the result.

Please post pics of your setup!

Here's some pics of my recent AVIC-F700BT install with the SoS/DF injection molded center console. You can tell by the pics who did the install. Top notch!

I just installed the updated firmware on the AVIC which is supposed to fix a ton of bugs. I've only been playing with it for about a half hour and so far I like it!

Nice install Deltron. Very clean look. That stick on carbon overlay looks way better with the console painted black underneath. Looks kinda cheap on the OEM color console.

Scrapping it!

After 3 attempts at not having to put in a Double Din unit..... the NSX is in the shop getting the new Alpine IVA-W505 installed. http://www.alpine-usa.com/US-en/products/product.php?model=IVA-W505

I just tested the unit with the navigation unit, my iPhone for Bluetooth and Video and it all worked flawlessly. I just hope the glare won't be too much.

The best part of it was when I told my wife... she respond with a big laugh and said, "It probably would have been cheaper to get a new car!" Damn I love this woman!!!!

That head unit looks pretty sweet but I really wish Alpine made a dual DIN unit that had no moving parts! :frown: I have no use to flip down the LCD face of these units to put in the portable nav (Which is useless IMO) or put in any CD's etc.... sigh

It's about time, Todd! I watched your saga with the single DIN units and just kept wondering to myself why you wouldn't give in. :) Double DIN for the win! Glare is perfectly livable once you adjust the brightness and contrast right.

I still prefer the Kenwoods for navigation and bluetooth but the Alpine is a good unit.

Yea...Yea...Yea... I really wanted to use the Nav Pod and 1 screen for the entire system. I think the Nav Pod completes the look of the dash, but really don't like the look of 2 screens (double din and nav pod).

Question for everyone. The system I am having installed has the HD Radio option. Does anyone have HD radio? What do you think about it? Worth the few hundred dollars?

Why two monitors? In case the driver and passenger want to watch different movies?

In all seriousness, I'm curious why some here choose to do two screens. Is it so one can serve as NAV, while the other is free to play media? Or is it simply a matter of wanting to avoid blank console space if you use the Honda Nav upper screen? I can see the bling appeal of two screens, but curious what other advantages it may have.

Well a couple reasons I guess. The secondary monitor is in-place and awaiting the future addition of Navigation & back-up camera. Also, for now I really enjoy the bling appeal of watching my music videos on two screens  freakin looks cool!

My wife and I travel a lot in the NSX.

1) I can navigate on the lower screen while my passenger watches movies on the upper monitor with headphones.

2) I can listen/control my Ipod on the lower monitor through the car speakers while the passenger watches movies or plays video games with headphones on the upper.

3) You need something to control the monitor in the upper nav pod, might as well be a video screen. Considered a single din but it just didn't fill up the space right in my opinion. (I still think my lower monitor is tough to see in the daytime and just about useless in direct sunlight.)

4) Bling.

I'm doing the exact same setup as Angelo above (same headunit etc.). (Angelo I've sent you a PM regarding the HCA cubby hole that was made for you)

What is the sensor or thingy that attaches to the vent area underneath the console just in front of the parking brake? Where the ashtray is I'm planning on replacing it with the cubby hole similar to Angelos's. But this sensor underneath the console that connects to where the vents are relies on the ashtray housing for it to attach to the console.

Any suggestions or can someone tell me what this thingy is? Is it some sort of air sensor?

I plan to install the headunit myself using the SOS brackets etc. What were the two black plugs that I disconnected from behind the stock NSX stereo?

Looking at this thread is not healthy for my wallet.

I know what you mean. I have all my the audio gear I need to do an install... but to install it I'm looking at $600+ in parts... just so i CAN install it.

What we need is cheap center consoles... $399 at SOS is crazy.

Good luck finding anything cheaper than that ... $399 is a good price actually... OEM is over $800 to replace all the trim in the car...

Tell me about it.... Just got the AVIC-F90BT / new carpet / SoS Stage 1 kit / and new CF console trim....

And where is the time to install this stuff?

After a few months of reconstruction i finally got the double din fitment perfect. well not me but some help from here and there. I know all these thanks may seem unnecessary but when someone goes above and beyond for me, i think a simple thank you shows a great deal of appreciation.
-I do have to thank Bradley (Malibu Rapper) for his expertise, help and harness. His work is neat and precise. He made a plug and play harness for direct connection to the Kenwood DNX5120. I a still using the factory amps and speakers with no issues.
- Thanks to Rich at Highline Car Audio for making/painting my double din and door switches. Real pleasure to deal with. Thanks for putting up with my expediting.
_ Thank to Joe (pbassjo) for helping me modify some parts here and there to get the best optimal fitment. Joe is always helpful to me whenever or whatever i need done to the NSX. Thanks for the ride too. Very tempting Joe :frown:
Well here are some pics from my Blackberry. I had the ashtray removed and in its place Rich made a pocket with the factory felt look. Paint was a satin semi gloss black finish.
