Who needs gobs of HP when suspension, weight loss, and skill (read luck) will get you there just as quickly with a fuller wallet? A few pictures from Thanksgiving weekend at VIR

Let him around so I could do it all again!!!

Actually we had a lot of fun that weekend with DONYMO and Jason Weaver and Mark and Maria Hicks (NSXNUT). My car was the only naturally aspirated NSX there, but I did have much more experience on VIR. There really was not that much difference in our times, and only the GT3's and GT3R's could pull away on us.

Honda Challenge should be interesting this summer

Hey! Watch what you call ugly!
This car is FUNCTIONAL...paint is secondary.
He bought a used hood and had it modified by DALI.

Hi ncdogdoc,

That's my friend's black Supra TT behind the Miata in your first photo. We were both at G&W's Fall Fling last year. I drove the blk '91 NSX from Ontario, CANADA. Unfortunately, I couldn't make it this year which was a real bummer since it would of been nice to hook up with you guys again, assuming you were there last year. I seem to remember the fellow with the yellow BBSC NSX from last year.

My friend Bruce, with the Supra, mentioned he noticed the silver NSX going off the track at the Oak tree turn as he was tracking out of it. He managed to capture him on his video as he (the silver NSX) entered the pit area off to the left and re-entered the circuit at full tilt further down the backstraight behind my friend's Supra. That was priceless to see on video. He also captured you on his video a couple of times that he encountered you on the track. Your car sounded sweet as it pulled away from him big time.

So what kind of mods have you done to your NSX? Seems to be working for you.

What sort of lap times were you and your friends doing at VIR? My friend was doing low 2:18's. I was at VIR in March/03 with The BMW Tarheel chapter and I was doing mid 2:19's but I suspect I was a bit off my pace.

Functional is great and all, but you can make it look nice too!

DONYMO,

I'll see want I can do about posting a clip.

Just noticed you're from the Atlanta area. Were you by any change at the Panozs school at RA the weekend prior to G&W's Fall Fling event. My friend with the black Supra did that one as well. That event was mostly dominated by Z06's and Supra TT's. Man, that turn at the Suzuki bridge looks wild. The fastest Z06 was turning low 1:40's.

"Dominated?" I would never dream about timing myself at one of these driver's ed schools...that would make it a competition and would void any insurance claims. :D

Seriously...I have been to a few Panoz track days, but not the weekend you're talking about. Low 1:40's is very good for a street car...very good. That is around the times the Speed World Challenge Touring cars do.

The Suzuki bridge...aka turn 12...is quite a turn. It really scares the crap out of some people. Just don't lift or hit the brakes or it's a date with a cement wall.

So much of "how fast a car is" has less to do with the car and more to do with the driver. Also, it is not fair (for example) to compare a car with a cage and Hoosiers to a car that is running street tires and no cage. My point is: to say a particular brand/model of car "dominated" the event doesn't mean anything (to me).

I remember you very well from last year. I believe your car had Teins and race rubber, and not much else, and you were seriously outrunning me back then. I was driving this car completely stock that day, including street tires and stock brakes. I made quite a few off course excursions due to severe brake fade. I had just bought the car two weeks earlier and wanted to see how it would do. I changed to my SO3's on Sunday and could actually make a few consistent laps, but still lost brakes 15-20 minutes into the session.

I have dropped about 400# from the car, added the Comptech Pro suspension (thread coming soon), race rubber (Kuhmos) and Panther Plus brake pads with Project Mu rotors. Dali track bar up front with stock bar in the rear, and lots of practice.

I was directly behind Mark when he did the fish tail out of Oak Tree, quite a site. Too much horsepower:D and not enough heat in the tires yet. We lost MANY cars due to the low temps and lack of traction with R compound tires, including two of G&W's GT3R current race cars. Mark handled the off very well, and was back on course quickly, but could never quite catch up. Then again, I could never quite pull away. Damn traffic:D

I honestly do not have a lap time due to the video camera being left at the house that weekend and I do not have an AMB or Hotlap setup running yet.

I am curious as to what "event" this was???? Thanks as I will start fresh next year in a NA NSX after having a turbo integra FWD for 5 years!

G&W motorsports is headquartered at VIR. At the end of the ALMS/Grand AM season each year they have an open house and track weekend. Four separate groupings - Novice, Under 3.0liter, over 3.0liter, and Licensed Race cars. It is really a lot of fun, and they used to let you take passengers but mysteriously changed that this year at the last minute.

It is a testament to form follows function:D

Actually, it is so I can always pick out my car in pictures, cuz no one has anything like it. Plus it gives Lud something to pick on me about when dealing with style and class:eek:

Dear Valued NSX Prime Member:

While I deeply value the thoughts and input of our community with regards to this website, I regret to inform you that I am currently unable to accept aesthetic criticism from someone whose car looks like this:

Gary,

You have very good memory. You're correct, my NSX had the Tein REs and I was on Toyo RA1s on the factory rims. That was indeed a great weekend last year. It was also our first time at VIR. My friend and I saw the VIR Speed World Challenge races on TV last year and convinced ourselves we definitely must go there.

The G&W is a great venue. I ended up getting nearly 8 hrs of track time over that weekend due to the organizers allowing me to run in the other run groups. I'd finish my run and get right in line with the next group. After a while, I'd forget which group I'd be in and got black flagged a few times for passing in non-designated zones. They were pretty cool about it though. I hear they broke up the run sessions into 30 min sessions this year rather than the hour long sessions of previous years.

I'll definitely make it a point to attend next year's Fling. Any of you boys planning on going to NSXPO at Watkins Glen next fall. If so, see you there.

Rui

Hey! A little equal time...

What's the name of this forum? Track talk or Smack talk ;) ?
Yes, that's me in the familiar silver NSX above...
Wouldn't it be easy for NCDOGDOC to manipulate the order of the above pix and offer random fictional commentary... the shot that the silver NSX isn't in is probably when I pitted for a driver change, so Maria could come out and SPANK the boys :D !

Glad to hear someone got some footage of my little off at Oak Tree. Very entertaining, I'm sure. The track steward actually complemented me on my save (a little wiggle in the grass) and subsequent re-joining from the south pit lane (very safe). I believe my comrades, DONYMO and NCDOGDOC, leave a little of the story untold by not mentioning their own offs! Gary flung the TrackRat off at T17, the run onto the front straight, in a valiant effort to stay in front of me! Needless to say, he gave up a great deal of track position while mowing the pasture  !

Indeed, the TrackRat shows great pace, and it is interesting to note that we were making equivalent lap times (I couldn't catch Gary; he couldn't catch me)... The TrackRat is NA, totally stripped down, 400+lbs lighter than my Silver BBSC, which retains all of its creature comforts and complete interior, and mega hi-fi too! I was clocked in the 2:18s, not bad for first-ever outing at VIR. Can't wait to go back... truly one of the great road courses in the country!

To DOCJOHN: re: the minimum ground clearance you see beneath my front spoiler... I have the TEIN RA Trackmaster set-up with 5oo+lb front spring rates, and the DALI 23mm track bar! You can generate some big cornering loads in many places at VIR. And, Don is right, my Speedlingerie has been patched and repaired numerous times! It is really impossible to keep from making contact if you use the car seriously...

To NETVIPER: I LIKE the 'ugly' hood on the TrackRat... if you know Gary, it really puts it in context...

Don’t let Maria know you gave him "a little wiggle in the grass"... with or without a condom "very safe"

Ask Maria about the little VW in the uphill esses! ;)

All kidding aside guys, great weekend! Wish the old yellow car wasn't having catch can issues so I could have played a little more! We got to do it again! We need to try for a big NSX turnout next year!

Talk to everybody soon!

Hey Gary, I'm pretty sure Mark just insulted you. ;)

Looks like a fun weekend, sorry I was out of town and couldn't make it!
