Do you call it "Cali"?

As a native from "SoCal" and an "Angeleno", I never refer to Northern California as "NorCal". In fact, with the exception of "San Fran", I rarely refer to anything in Northern California at all! :p

I am guilty of referring to freeways as "the 110", "the 405", and "the 5".

I try hard NOT to refer to Orange County as "the O.C.", but sometimes I do so just to mock them.

yeah, what's up with that, anyway? "they've" (transient radio / tv folks) have tried to do the same up here, too, but we're not so easily swayed ;)

I call it Cali about half the time, depends on who I'm talking to and if it's an informal conversaion. It's a lazy thing, why say 4-5 syllables when you only have to say 2.

Ditto. The same goes 4 typing. DYKWIM

I've said Cali for a while. I'm neither a rapper nor do I wanna live there :p (i do wanna look at sanfran, but as of now I don't wanna live there)

But I do cringe when people say "San LeWis" instead of "San Louis" or "LompocK" instead of "Lompoke." To SLO and Lompoc residents, those pronunciations invoke a mild but immediate rebuke. And rightly so. ;)
The funniest thing is when people display their ignorance by referring to San "Louie" Obispo... :D

I lived there for 9 years, and still don't want to live anywhere else in the world.

I'm not so sure about San Fransisco..except for the housing prices are insaine.

I was talking to a lady the other day that grew up in the L.A.area and moved away when she was 37, and she refered to southern california as "Hell on Earth"...she did however refer to It as "California" and not "Cali"

what's california??
east coast is the right coast......

No self-respecting Californian calls the state "Cali", just as no self-respecting resident of San Francisco would ever utter the word "Frisco". (They're unlikely to even say San Francisco -- it's usually just "The City".)

Saying such words identifies someone as either a n00b or an outsider. It's a good social tool in that regard.

No Cali. Either California or if I want to be more specific, SoCal or NoCal.
Ditto, except for NorCal instead of NoCal.

* There's only one "The City": San Francisco
* There's only one "Bay Area" or "The Bay": San Francisco Bay Area
* San Luis Obispo can be referred to as "SLO".
* Even Cal Poly, SLO's phone numbers start with SLO-XXXX (756-XXXX).
* You include the "s" at the end of Luis: It's a French saint, but the city and mission are of Spanish origins and spelling, thus you pronounce the whole word as you would in Spanish, not French.

When living in NorCal, you don't refer to it as NorCal, just California. When living in SoCal, everyone says SoCal unless they're specifically including NorCal, in my experience. Oh, and there's a hella lot of traffic on the 405!!!

I grew up in (and recently moved back to) "the South Bay". I'm not talking about "the Bay Area" either. Does anyone living outside of L.A. County know this region by that moniker?

Orange County native here that refers your area as the South Bay.

I guess it's just a newer generation vs older generation thing.

I say Cali (unless speaking formally), I'm not ignorant, nor a "n00b" here. It's just what everyone around me refers to it as.

I don't call San Francisco "The City," it's either San Fran or Frisco; I've heard of Frisco referred as "The City" and it always takes me a second to realize what they're talking about.

I only refer to my location as NorCal if someone not from Cali asks where I'm located. Otherwise, for those from Cali, I just say Sac.

As for saying "hella," I'll have to admit, it comes out quite often. I remember talking to a friend from Seattle saying that she's only heard that term used regularly in Cali (yes, she refers to it as Cali also).

It's California. Where sissys want heated seats for their NSX because it gets chilly at night.

By the way. "The City" is NEW YORK CITY, no place else.

San Franciso is San FranFruito.

I suspect you're right, but I weep for the younger generation :(.

I"ve never heard of anything called "The City"... except for the one or two cities we have in my whole state :p. That could be a regional nickname really.

I visited new york this past month (weeklong trip only spent $500 including plane roundtrip and a pair of $140 HugoBoss shoes, food, transportation, etc) and I liked it at the time. I could live in Manhattan, but I don't have millions of dollars to do so.

I visited Chicago last month also, and damn it's so much nicer than NYC. I never thought I would like Chicago either, but if I had to pick a place to move to, right now it's at the top of my list.

I need to visit "Frisco" but that's a long way from here.

Back on topic: Yea yea, Cali surfin' etc...
