I suddenly feel this compunction to purchase a mobile home.

I was all excited to show off my newly learned counting skills too! I learned how by counting my tooth.
just saw this thread and wanted to congratulate you on the successful implant, craig - it looks great! (and seems to have resolved your drooling while stuttering problem.... tres cool!)

Few in the class of 2014 know how to write in cursive,

All I know is that I want the hours of my education back where I was taught cursive. What a waste of time. I thought it was pointless then, and I definitely think it's pointless now. I can't remember the last time that I had to write something out at work by hand aside from scribbling notes, much less using some archaic script. I think I use it to sign my name and that's it.

More math, or an early start at a second language would have been much better use of that time. Stupid public school

I can see what you mean.
For me, however, it is a completely indispensable life skill that I use day in and day out, acquired at a very modest outlay of time.

Just my opinion, but I have to disagree. Is it really a bad way for a five year old to develop their eye-hand coordination? Is it really a bad thing to serve as a way to build basic communication skills? Could it serve as a bridge to appreciate letters and later an appreciation of "letters" and reading? Couldn't serve as a basis for understanding our language? One must understand our language prior to understanding other languages. I know, I speak, read and with three languages. It's a basic building block that will be used for the rest of our lives. If I had a kid, I would prefer that they hone their writing skills, which they will use forever, versus playing baseball. Like I said, just my opinion.

Meh, I've always been pragmatic, never had trouble with coordination or communication, and always wondered why, if I could convey something perfectly well printing, I needed some additional and less legible form of writing. To each their own I suppose. Given our current culture, I'd far prefer any future child of mine do something athletic (so yeah, still no baseball), vs. learn a second method of writing when most of what they'll be doing in the "real world" is typing.

and now:

Wow amazing pictures. I find it odd that once you add color to those photos, most of those photos and settings does not look that old ( with the exception of the african american parts ) and it shows how far we have come in that sense.

Yup, I can drive less than an hour from where I live in Tennessee and see a pretty close approximation of several of those farm/small-town scenes. Apparently hay-stacks, blue jeans, and flannel are timeless lol. The only real difference would be the lack of Model "T"s.

One other observation I made particularly with the ladies eating lunch at the train yard was the distinct lack of plastic. Tin lunch-box, and either foil or wax-paper wrapping for the food. metal thermoses, etc. Not sure why that struck me, but it's interesting to think about.

Great photos. Thanks for sharing Richard. Strange how so many things have changed and also how many things are different. The facial expressions demonstrated a sense of determination, but few smiles. Also interesting in terms of a patriotic sense being displayed. Thanks again.

On second thought, I think these images are powerful enough to have supported their own thread. Ah, well.

I keep coming back to these pictures. Probably because I recognize my own people, you know? People who were very dear to me were alive then, and it brings a taste of their world back with a startling immediacy.
Part of me wants to step into some of these pictures; another part thanks God that I didn’t have to live through those times: a crushing depression and the worst war the world has ever seen.

Re: that girly show. Are you kidding me? Do not want!

It had "girlie" in quotes, so I started wondering if they were dudes...

The "children asleep at a squaredance" picture cracked me up. It looked like a coat-check for kids or something. "yeah, just toss 'em over there"...
