I assume this is a scam just to get me to come in so they can try to sell me a vehicle.

Here are some key elements from the letter I received in the mail which really make no sense to me:

Ira Toyota has been selected as a site to conduct a special pricing and financing event (selected by who?!?!). Your status as an Ira customer qualifies you for this private sale (what, they won't sell anyone else a car during this event unless they have this piece of paper in hand???)

Ira Toyota is in desperate need to acquire several pre-owned 2000 Toyota Celicas in order to fulfill special used vehicle requests (come ON!!! This sounds absolutely ridiculous). Our records indicate you own one of these vehicles and our new car managers have been authorized to buy back your current vehicle (at obscenely low rates I imagine).

Am I perhaps being a bit cynical here and don't know about these strange events that aren't offered to the general public where they make it sounds like I can trade in my old car for a new one without paying a cent (it actually more or less makes that claim in this letter)... we're actually looking at trading her car in for a RAV4, so we'll probably check this out, but I just wanted to make sure this is nothing more than an every day event at the dealership.

i got something in the mail from the Honda dealer near me about 2 months ago. they were saying they wanted my car yada yada, they probably just want you to trade it in and spend more money. i think its "legit", just not the deal part because car dealers are the debil!

That guy that went undercover as a car salesman mentioned one of the dealers he worked at used that exact sales pitch. What they want you to do is sell them your car, but then most people realize they now need a new car since they just sold their car to the dealer and end up using that money on a new car in the lot. Basically it becomes a trade in. They really want you to buy a new car from them. The funny thing would be if you wanted to sell your car anyway and sold it to them for the higher than market value they claim then just walk off the lot with the cash

How could u possibly forget that u need a car when you go to sell your, presumably, only car? ...unless you have the memory of a goldfish.

Wish they had that deal when I was trying to sell my '00 celica for the NSX!

I get those all the time as well. I get it from a Honda dealership who has only seen my car one time to do the emissions and inspecition on it. I contacted the general manager and asked what right they had to sell my info to a marketing firm like that. I was also getting junk mail from an affiliated lending agency that was part of the event. He was not able to give me a straight answer. I demanded that they remove me from their list immediately. He said he would, and must have because I haven't gotten anything from them since.

i could tell they were pretty annoyed when i refused to disclose what kind of car i would be interested in buying and just wanted a price on my wifes car, but when all was said and done, they actually offered me a pretty good price. $8k for a 2000 celica GT with 63k, that's about what i see them selling for in private sales (and more than on ebay motors).

they did admit they sent those flyers to EVERYONE with a toyota they had in their database.

They are just trying to get you to come in.... I bet that "special customer" who wants your trade in is the nearest auction or your friendly wholesaler....

Update on the dealership that I was referring to above. It just caught on fire this morning. And no, I didn't have anything to do with it? Anyone looking to buy some cheap, never been smoked"in" new Hondas?
