I haven't yet tested the battery but will be shortly, but when I turn the key to start the car, it won't turn over and every light on the dash flickers on and off and I also hear clicking from the engine bay... Last time I had a dead battery everything was dead... Could this be anything other than a dead battery? Main relay perhaps??

Try cleaning your battery terminals first. If that doesn't work, it is likely a dead battery.

will your lights turn on? does your radio work?

*if no, check your terminal for a loose connection or a corroded connection. Clean them off, make sure you have a tight, clean, clear connection.

Then try to start it again...

no go again, test your battery.

*if lights and radio work, when you try and start it; does it continue to click, click? Does the engine attempt to turn over?

If it just clicks and does not even attempt to turn over it could be starter or main relay....

Low battery. Mine does exactly what you described when it sits too long.

Won't hurt to clean the terminals.

Battery might be going bad or something like the trunk light stuck on is drawing it down.

put the car on a trickle charger for a couple hours and when i came home it started right up. I'll have to check when i last bought my battery to see if it's due....
Thanks for the answers.

you might also want to check your fuel relay. Thats what happend to my car recently. I got a New Batt, checks the main relay, Starter and all of the above mentioned and it finally didnt want to start. Does your fuel pump turn on? like a humming noise?.

How many miles are on your car? If it's not the battery or main relay, check your starter. could be the going bad.

I did the whole replace the battery, main relay, ignition switch, new ground wire thing. My car had the same symptoms. The contacts on the starter were worn so thin they were not making a good connection. Replaced the starter and it's been great ever since. I still have I should just buy new contacts and have it rebuilt

My negative battery terminal came loose randomly in the middle of a trip.I stopped for food and it wouldn't start back up. It looked fine but it wasn't securely screwed down.

me also, now, I put a small point of super glue on the terminal before fixing the cable, now it's well fixed and it is not detached any more:smile:
