A friend of mine told me that they proved on that "Mythbusters" show on the Discovery Channel that cell phones couldn't possibly cause a fire. I would think that it could definitely be possible but he told me they tried hundreds of times with a cell phone near open gasoline and fumes and nothing ever remotely happened.

I watched that episode of Mythbusters and they did confirm that a cell phone does not start a fire. They mentioned that static electricity is most likely the culprit.
I recall from a source that there is an interesting statistic... Of fires that occur at a gas station, younger woman tend to have this occur to them. It turns out that many people who build up static electricity from their clothes tend to create sparks that ignite the gasoline. The reason why they theorize that it is younger women is that they tend to go back into their cars as they are filling up. They say men tend to stay outside, and not go into their cars while filling. Why younger? Older men and women tend to grab a part of their car when they get out, and thus ground themselves before filling up. The younger women will egress and ingress without needing to grab anything.
I've always wondered if the cell phone thing was true. I do hate when I'm at the pump and someone at a nearby pump gets in their car while pumping. I just get ready to jump for cover whenever I see this. How lazy can someone be that they can't stand in one place for the 2-3 minutes it takes to fill up their car? These are the kind of people that need full service stations.
That's right Yawwn, the incident rate is higher with younger women. There's also problems with young guys with chick-magnets.
Here's a document I received with this video clip supposed released by Shell warning about the dangers: SHELL-Safetyandpetrol.doc 146KB
