Conflict: Factory vs. Owner’s Manual

Just bought a new 2018 NSX. The factory videos and the dedicated Acura NSX sales guy both said that the engine is broken-in at the factory. The videos interview a Master Engine Builder at the Engine Plant, who says that “we test every new engine for 5 minutes at 2,000rpm, 20 minutes at 3,000rpm, 20 minutes at 4,000rpm, so that you can buy it off the showroom floor, then take it to the track IMMEDIATELY. NO BREAK-IN PERIOD.”

However, page 103 of the Owner’s Manual states: “During the first 600mmiles (1,000 kilometers) of operation, avoid sudden acceleration or full-throttle operation so as to avoid damaging the engine or powertrain.”

Which is it?

Congrats on your new NSX.

Owners manuals are written more by lawyers than anyone else these days. The engine is in fact ready to go hard right off the showroom floor.

That said. Your tires, brakes, transmission, and differential clutches however? They are all still virgin. So maybe take it easy for the first tank of gas.

All NSX training that we go through talks about the fact that the engine is broken in from the factory and could be tracked day 1 if you like. Even still, everyone has their process for breaking in their new cars. I try and take it easy for the first 500 miles or so but that is all personal preference at that point. Congratulations on the purchase and welcome!

Thank you, and the MasterNSXTech. OK, I’ll put a few miles on it before tracking it. The Track-Day season isn’t yet in full swing here on the east coast, anyway.

I’m a track guy, although all of my track experience in on liter-bikes. (BMW HP-4 & Aprilia RSV-4 RF). Can’t wait to post some pics.
