I'm about to register my NSX and need a smog check to go along with it.

The previous owner replaced the airbox with a cone filter.

Should I go ahead and get the smog check with this thing on and hope it will pass? Or will it fail automatically?

I live in L.A. with the toughest air pollution laws and I need to know what I should do.

Joel,

sounds like you have the car now, congrats. When would you like to take a leisure drive and meet up

The cone filter, won't effect the passing of the emmission part, but definetely fail Visual. When I had my Rx-7 smogged, most station wouldn't do the test because of the cone filter.

Thanks silverone.
The car needs some minor replacements and I kinda want to make everything complete before it makes its debut.

If the cone filter is CARB (California Air Resources Board) certified, you'll pass the test.
You just need to know the make and model number of the filter and the operator will look it up in his book to see if it is listed as certified.
If you don't have this information on your filter, you could always borrow someone's filter that has this info just to pass the test.
I'm pretty sure all K&N filters are certified.

Joel,

Good to know that you finally have the car in your own garage. Not sure about you, but after 4 years, I still take a peek in the garage before I go to sleep every night. I told my wife that I'm just making sure the garage door is closed.

) Good luck on your car!

Regarding smog check, I have done smog check with the cone filter charger on twice already. If you are paranoid about it, you are welcome to put my air intake box on for the smog check. If you come to Irvine, you can actually go to the shop ($39)that I use and you won't have to put on the air box at all.

Let me know how I can help.

Chris

CDube,

Thanks for the offers and helping hand!

Actually my mechanic referred me to a guy he knows at a Test Only site. Ever since I got there, he couldn't stop praising the NSX. So much so that I don't think he even noticed the cone. If he did, not a word came out of his mouth.

Anyway, I passed. Whew!
Now, off to finalize my registration.
