I just thought you all might want to know a little more about Comptech's short shifter kit for all NSX's. All I can say is wow! If it wasn't for having to take the center console apart, this would be a fairly straight forward modification. In fact the mod itself is probably easier than removing the center console. But that's just me, and I've done that more than once. Since I had to fix some minor problems in this area anyhow such as the aspirator fan, the autoclimate control board, and a new stereo install, it made it more than worthwhile to go to all the effort.

You will find with the kit, that all the parts are made to the highest standard and they fit as they should. The installation process is fairly straight forward and the instruction sheet is right on in what you have to do and in what order. They even have all necessary torque specs. which I find all too often are missing in other instruction sheets. Kudos to them for doing a great job on this kit.

Now how does it feel? Well for my five speed it's like a whole new gear box. When I first moved the lever I thought I was in first. I actually was in third. That's how much tighter the shift pattern has gotten from side to side. Going from 1st. to 2nd. is quick. All gears are selections are quick. I can't wait to get this on the track especially after my new clutch install. Hopefully when they do that one, I will take pictures and write an article for the NSX magazine on the install.

For those who really want to quicken the shifting of an already great shifter, then this is the way to go. I highly recommend it.

Nice little advertising there.
Seriously though, I have always considered doing this mod but didn't know if it was worth it or not. I don't drive the car a whole lot but it seems like the shifter is pretty short as it is. It is that much of a shorter throw?
Does it just shorten it front to back or from side to side also. From your post it sounds like side to side. I always thought it was just the opposite.

The Comptech shifter shortens the front to back motion and you can choose to shorten the side to side movement also. The SOS unit will only shorten the front to back movement. I choose to go with the SOS since the side to side is already tight and I was concerned about a miss placed shift.

Ok, thanks for clearing that up. I too would be concerned about the same as you were.
Are the motions adjustable or preset?

The Comptech short shift kit does both front to back and side to side and as far as I know it's not adjustable nor one or the other. You get both with the kit like it or not.

Sounds like a great mod for the NSX. Now has anyone here installed the Comptech short shifter kit on a 97+ 6 speed? The 6 speed is relatively short already, but I was thinking of getting this kit for my 97. I just want to know if there are any pros or cons for a 6 speed before I put the trigger and get one.

I have the comptech short shifter kit as well and personally, I am not concerned about sideways mis-shift problem, and this is on a 6 speed. When I had the 5 speed, I hated the long sideway move from 4th->5th so this actually suits me better. Just don't be trying to shift lightening quick as if you are some kind of a maniac racer and you'll be fine. Also, when I downshift(when I try anyways  ) I do it the old-skool way(double clutch) where I shift into neutral first which prevents me from going into 2nd if I am shifting from 5->4 as i have to push to the left then down to get into 2nd where as 4th, I just push down.

I like the kit with the OEM shift knob than the regular shifter with the shortened shift knob. About the same throw and less effort.

I've driven Kip's fabulous 91 which had a 6 speed with this kit. In fact his car was the prototype test vehicle for the kit. It shifted great. No problem finding any gear I wanted either up or down.

Al,
Glad you like the Comptech Short Shifter Kit. I make the Titanium Dave's Short Shifter linkage SOS and Dali has been selling and want to point out a difference. I chose to make mine 20% shorter travel for and aft, instead of 25% in both directions. The slightly longer travel lends it's self to a shorter shift lever or one of the lower shift knobs SOS and Dali sell.

It's great to have options so everyone can get the set up they like!

If any one is interested in having their shift lever shortened, feel free to PM me. I can shorten levers up to 1 1/2" for $40, I have one that is shortened we can send it back and forth as an exchange, and you only need your console torn apart for a short while.

Jackson,

Your welcome to test out my 6 speed... I purchased the Comptech short shift kit and only installed the fore and aft, I decided not to install the side to side at this time. Although, I may consider installing the side to side later...

Now that I've had a chance to verify a few things from Comptech, I didn't know I could just install either the fore/aft or side-to-side clamps from their kit. The instructions don't really give you a hint on this, but after reading the parts list and talking to those who designed it, you can leave out the side to side clamp if you wish on their kit. I may test this out since my dash will be apart for awhile while I'm waiting for some parts to come in. I'm also going to wait till after I have the new Comptech clutch installed before I do any real heavy testing. Right now my old clutch is in need of some help.

I also agree that choices of different shift kits to suit different needs is nice.

Mike,

Thanks for the offer, I might take you up on this.

I just installed this kit today. I like the end result. Slightly disappointed that my kit was missing two lock nuts :( Thankfully home depot was open.
