Chicago-area GTG: late October

Sounds like a plan. I will try to get the milwaukee-area NSXers there as well, perhaps two or three additional. I'll post as soon as I know if anyone else is coming, or I'll have them reply to this thread.

My only worry is not having the NSX out of the shop by then. I am embarassed to admit that I pulled a non-catastrophic money shift during the last session on Sunday. I partially engaged 2nd at 110 mph coming into turn 1.
Thanks -- the more (cars and people) the merrier.

Am sorry to hear about the downshift.... 5->4 turned 5->2 are never fun. Hopefully its not as bad as it could be.

Actually, it was 3-4 turned 3-2. I don't see 5th gear at Road America. I think I have a partially worn synchro in 4th, which contributed to the error (in addition to the dreaded red mist), as the gear grinds a little when I try to engage it at an RPM higher than the road speed RPM in 4th, but is fine if the RPM is lower.

It is not as bad as it could have been. Had the gear engaged fully, the car would have spun violently at 110 mph. The oil pump gears did not shatter, so the engine did not blow up. Bent valves beat an engine replacement any day.

And yes, I have read about the M3 tragedy in California (I also frequent the BMW forums, where it has had quite an impact.)

It is a good reminder of what can happen. I am all for a spirited drive, but one must be careful and sane about it. :)

We lost 1 NSX going into turn 1 already (Brian H.) few years back. I am glad you didn't do that! Hopefully everything will be ok with the motor.

As am I.

The rough idle means something is wrong, likely bent valves, but I will consider myself lucky if that is all it is. I realize that some NSXes have a rough idle and are OK, but mine sounds noticeably different than it used to.

Steve, Tom, All

Sorry, I wil not be able to make it on the 19 :( as my wife and I are having a baby shower for our soon to arrive first child.

I think she would kill me if I missed it, especialy since she gave me the entire weekend for RA

Ryan, on your motor I'm sure that they will check, but sorry to say bent valves almost always need new pistions (thats what bends the valves) Hope you get lucky and just need a tune-up after the good hard driving.

Later Kevin

jeans should be fine

As far as I know, they're pretty casual, being "a club in the country", but I've seen everything from "dressy casual" to "Sunday best" at this place.

Jeans should be OK.

Good luck Bell turbo...

I wish, I built a new house this summer and my wife made me promise no more track days for the rest of 2003 :(

I did do Windy City BMW in May and then I had to retire for the year. I will be back in full force in 2004 :)

I will probably start the year off with STU in April. But hey I did get an "X" this year!!!! I will see you @ the brunch.

Steve I should get the same rims too. That way when I do my high speed 41 runs, they will think it is you!! Just kidding. You know me........I will make it look as different as possible as yours and Kev's. :D

Does anyone mind a guest of mine bringing a Nismo 350Z? He was going to ride along with me, but thinks he would rather drive his car? Any objections????

AH... i wish I could you join you guys, especially being the new kid on the block, but I don't think that my girlfriend who will be in from California would be thrilled if I took off (or dragged her along) to a day of cars when she came out here to spend time with me.

On a side note, does anyone in the Chicago area run aftermarket exhaust on their X? I don't like to old style factory tips on my '91 and am looking for a bit louder tone but want to hear one in person before I drop the 1+ grand on it. I was thinking of the Taitec GT but am interested in listening to anything that may be around.

Thanks!

Rob,
You should come...you can listen to the different exhausts on the NSXs that will be there...mine DC Headers,Taitec By- pass pipes and a RM DTM exhaust. I'm sure someone there will have the Taitec. Just tell your girl your surprising her and your taking her somewhere special for Brunch.;)

Hope to see you there.

I partially engaged 2nd at 110 mph coming into turn 1. I caught it right away and engaged the clutch such that the gear was never fully engaged, but the engine saw approx. 10,500 RPM for about 1/3 of a second. The engine did not explode, and I drove it home (I know!). A rough idle has John Vasos and I suspecting a few slightly bent valves, and I await the result of a cylinder leakdown test today.

Even if I need new valves, to the tune of $1500-2000, I should be able to make it. Just don't expect me to pick up the check. ;)

Ryan,
So what's the news on the car anyway??? Tom Bell is picking up his new NSX up Thursday in GA and should be home in time for the Brunch. So where is a good place to meet up with you guys... We are coming down 41-45 to 894 to I- 43 I guess is Acura of Brookfiled out of the way? we plan on going through Miwaukee about 8.30-8.45am so give us some ideas.

Volo is apparently not that far away, so it may not be a bad idea. I'm fairly flexible.

Thanks Steven... but with me having to get her to the airport early evening... I just don't see it happening... next time though. Just out of curiosity... how many of you guys are from Chicago? Ever do beer nights?
