check engine light with test pipes?

hi, I have a 97 nsx with comptech supercharger, headers and exhaust. I am contemplating adding the test pipes, but have been told that the check engine light will come on. (something about o2 sensor will not like the cats being removed.)

(1) is this true or untrue? (for a 97 emission spec nsx)
(2)Obvioiusly running the car around with the check engine light on, is not what i want to do... so does anyone know how to get around this?

Thanks

Tom

nsxtasy,

With all due respect, I'll do what i want to my car and you do what you want to yours. I am not trying to create a debate, but i don't appreciate your response. I am going to track my car and I really don't care if you agree or disagree with this. This is a free country and you are entitled to your opinion, but the purpose of this board is to exchange info and help and your post (and now mine) are not in line with this.

Thanks and let's have fun with these cars, whatever way we want!

Sounds like you have been smoking the maui wowi!:) 1991-1994 OBD I 1995-Present OBD II

97CTSC,
The check engine light will come on. You can still drive the car and everything will be fine other than the annoying bright yellow light shining in your face.

Aloha from Kailua (Oahu)!

I just bought a '94 and it's being shipped to Hawaii. It has RM headers and exhaust. I will be supercharging or turbocharging it. How much difference does removing the cats make in normally aspirated and in boosted configurations?

Aloha,
Steve in Hawaii

i dont know how much you'll get on the NSX, but when i had an RX7 tt and ran a striaght pipe, i gained close to 30 rwhp with proper tuning.

Straight piping a naturally aspirated car probably isnt worth it if youre gonna drive it on the street. power gains are minimal and youll only see it at the top of your rpm band. It sacrifices a lot of low end and isnt worth it IMO.

Your 91 is OBD I. OBD II came out in late 1995. OBD II cars have oxygen sensors before and after the cats. If you want to run test pipes, the only way to get away with no check engine lights, is by hanging the second after cat oxygen sensor out in the atmosphere. This would trick the computer into thinking it still has a cat, with a cleaner after cat reading(making it think the cat is working).
