The recent thread on RAM for an old computer reminded me of an organization that I recently stumbled across: freecycle.org
Like many people I've sometimes had household goods that are too nice to throw out but are just taking up space in my house. I've found new homes for stuff through our church and so on but freecycle offers another alternative. Freecycle works through local "chapters" which operate on Yahoo Groups. You join the group for your area and can then post messages offering things to anyone who can use them. I recently found a home for an old monitor that was in perfect working condition but taking up valuable desk space. No money changes hands, no trading, just a simple offer and then you make arrangements for the recipient to pick up the goods.
