Changing transaxle oil

I'm changing the tranny oil but I'm a little confused about what kind of oil to use. The service manual calls for 10/30 or 10/40 but doesn't say if regular motor oil is ok or if a special gear oil in that weight is needed.

A search of Prime yields conflicting results: some say "never use motor oil in the transaxle" while others say it works fine. What's the official word? I was planning to use MobilOne 10/30 synthetic - the same oil I use in the engine.

Tips, hints, suggestions?

mobil 1 synthetic is just fine.

our MTF is just 10w30 weight dyno motor oil with friction modifier for the syncros to grip better.

it says in the manual i think. if you run out of tranny fluid and need to top off you can use 10w30 weight motor oil.

you'll find that your tranny might grind a bit more when shifting with the m1 since it does not have friction modifier in the fluid.

i always thought it would be cool to put in M1 with 1 bottle of GM FM.

isn't that what he is trying to get away from, the reason the tranny grinds is because the synchro cant brake, resulting in a rough eng. no fun

Ya know , I have been pondering what oil to to use , so I went to Honda and they are using something that is 60W to 75W or something like that . It looks like water consistency to me , so I gave it a miss . I can't help but think it would leak passed every seal there is . I'm going to use mobil 1 synth

I finally put the Honda MTF in mine last night. Snow all melted away so I was able to drive it a short distance, and I noticed right away that the "notchiness" I used to have going into 3rd was gone. Seems to shift much smoother now. According to the service records I got with the car, the tran oil was last changed in December '05, but it didn't indicate what kind of oil they used. Whatever it was looked fairly clean coming out.

Anyway, use the Honda MTF and you'll be happy. :smile:

BTW, how many quarts do I need? I'm to lazy to look.

Do you change the MTF filter or just clean and what kind of chemical to clean it?

I just cleaned it with dishwasher soap and air dried it over night. The filter is made of plastic and very fine wire mesh. My filter was very clean as I only have 14,000 mile on my 2001 NSX. I used the new Honda MTF.

Before that I did not know there was a filter. I don't think it is show on the online 91 service manual. Thanks Dave.

Crap, I didn't know there was one either. My service records showed about 20K since last tranny oil change. Now I wonder how gunked up the filter might be.

I suppose I could drain out the new oil I just put in, clean the filter and reuse the oil.

I completely agree it is a good idea to check/clean the filter, however I would not do the job over for that. Just do it next time.

I am not sure that dish soap would be my choice. How about spray it off with a little brake parts cleaner? First take a magnet and run it over the fliter and see if you get any ferris particles. There probably isn't anything on it anyway.

The O-ring should be just fine to reuse. Coat the O-ring with a little tranny oil before you put it back in.

I am sure that the manual gives you a number, but just snug will do the job.

BTW, how did the clutch master change come out? I think that on sunday when I called, you must have been on your back under the dash. Sorry about that.
