Changing struts/shocksh questions

The bumper stops are there to limit the travel of the shock to the chassis or of the wheel within the fender. NOT replacing them is not a good idea IMO.

Yeah, thats what I thought. I'm going to have to remove them again:frown:
Another 5-6 hours of wrenching.

I highly recommend just taking it to the dealership next time. Don't do it yourself. It's really a biaaach.

It's always good to see whats under your car and whats going into it... But having someone else to do it can only make you wonder " What if?" IMO Being a car enthusiast, I would rather do the wrenching myself. Always good to learn something new

Didn't your new shocks come with new bump stops? My Bilsteins did, if I understand what you are talking about.

No, my Koni sports did not come with bump stops unfortunately. I wanted adjustables ,so I did not go with bilsteins. I also wanted to lower the car a little more than an 1''. I also got H/R springs to go with the set up.

Some things I would rather do it myself, mechanics can always make a mistake and tear up CV boots and brake lines and later tell you some BS that you have a problem due to age resulting in more $$$$$$$$.

tear up CV boots.

That is probably the single most frightening aspect of the install? At least for me it was.

It was a real PITA to remove my existing shock+sleeve setup, about 1-2hrs per side. Then, my full coil setup took less than 20min each to install.

Autozone rents spring compressors for free, just leave a deposit and they'll refund the full amount when returned. Good luck.

Re: Changing struts/shocks questions

I just completed removing by struts for the second time now, but this time I did it by myself and the handy 2x4 trick. It saved me big time. It only took me 3 hours total from start (removing all 4 struts) to finish (re-installing all 4 struts).
That's a 3 hour difference in time.

My next question is I purchased a set of new bumper stops for all the struts from Acura. two are a little bit shorter than the others. I believe the parts manager told me that the taller bumper stops go in the front and the shorter bump stops go in the rear.

Can anyone verify this for me? I would assume that the shorter bump stops would go in the front, so that the car will be lowered more evenly? I might be wrong though.

Thanks for any advise or help

Gabe

The short bump stops go in the front, the tall bump stops in the rear.
It will not change anything of the lowering though. It is only for protection.

It's got to do something with the lowering because the bump stoppers rest between the top hat and the strut. my rear is slammed and the fronts are about 1" to high. the diff. is about 1"+ on both sets.

Are you saying the stops are compresed when the car's standing still? They should freely slide up and down the strut rods. You're talking about the piece circled here, right?

WOW! What a detailed diagram. I wish I had that prior to installation. Yes, the circle one is correct. I just swaped the front to the rear and it did make a difference. The front is definitely lower now than before. The rear bumper stops are supposed to have the taller ones than the front. I had it reversed.

Before shots with OEM shock/springs:

Pics right after removing the jacks with the Koni's / H&R springs.

Please excuse the photography. Not a good camera or photographer.
How long is the break in period for the springs to totally settle to it's lowest point? Hopefully not too much more.
