How it that possible? Does that mean the car was unregistered for 7 years? Does anyone know what that means? (Besides to be careful?)

Thanks Lud, but I thought the mileage was recorded each year when the inspection was done? I thought this information was then sent to the DMV? Guess I was wrong?

basically carfax is only useful if it shows you something wrong. if it doesnt show you anything wrong, it means absolutely nothing. every car fax report ive run on a used vehicle basically has many years of missing data. i frankly dont know how they manage to stay in business and offer the guarantee that they do.

The only "inspection" mileage I've seen reported on CarFax is emissions inspections in some (but not all) states, and even those don't usually seem to make it to carfax for every year.
Nobody has ever recorded mileage on any of my cars at inspection or registration renewal. In fact I do registration renewal over the Internet now, and the only number the DMV wants is my credit card number. The last time I had it inspected the guy was literally scared to touch it; I had to drive it into the service bay and honk the horn and turn on all the lights, then he did a 10 second walk-around visual inspection and gave me a sticker to put on myself.
