CAN DEALER ELECTRONICALLY CHECK ODOMETER

Can the dealer hook up an NSX to their service computer and determine what the actual mileage is on the car? I would think that they have the capability.

Don't most newer cars (C5 Vettes is the one I've heard of) also record it on the E.C.U.?
I don't know about NSX's or other cars and older cars too, good question.

It is not possible on the NSX, however, the dealer can do a lookup into the records with Acura or by using a third party service such as Carfax to determine the car's history and mileage.

I have been told by sources that in early nxs models it was possible to disconnect the speedometer and reconnect at a later time without evidence on the odometer of additional mileage use. Furthermore, I have known Porche owners with low mileage that had done just so do to the simplicity to disconnect. So much for low mileage Porches!!!!

Just curious, I don't think it is possible, but if it were, what happens if you change out the ECU? For example, I'm buying a used 92 NSX ECU because I am planning on putting a Dali chip in it and don't want to mess with the original. If I had a late model Vette and did the same thing, would my car now reflect inaccurate miles according to the ECU? Also, what if the ECU fails and you simply get a new one? I've heard about these ECUs possibly recording milage, but it just doesn't seem logical and accurate.

I know that BMW can even tell whether or not
you exceeded RPMS and for how long.

On another post-I stated the same was true
on my Mercury outboard motor.
My point in asking was to verify these mileage claims.

Maybe Acura can but it is not publicized for
whatever reason!

yes it is possible to disconnect the speedo, and drive it without ticking on any miles, only one issue, VTEC. VTEC will not come in since the ECU will not be registering the speed, and VTEC will not engage unless above 3mph.

just my .02 you can do it, so always be careful its easy to do, and no real way of knowing, beyond a CARFAX, or acura records...

There was a mechanic at the local Porsche/Audi/VW dealership a few years ago who, for a hundred bucks, would install a hidden switch to the odometer on your car...

I alkso saw people using tool to cut the speed up to 50% (they are digital devices used in motorcycles for correcting speed reading in case of change of transmission). This will allow the user to read the correct speed (divide by two) and to use VTEC and any other movement related feature.

A fast google search:

Here's for what they work, that "Honda sportcars" should be a hint.

The NSX does not store an odometer reading electronically. There is no mechanism for it to do so.

Oh good, let's post information to show people how to defraud prospective NSX owners. Nice.

Also better to not post anything, this way: the honest buyer (most of us) will never think that this $h!t happens and will never check the car for potemntial odometer fraud and the bad guy (1% of us?) will already know how things work or use Google and in 3s find out what is needed do achieve this.

Remember, criminals are a lot more organized than the average person. And if a person by reading this decide to really go the bad way, he would have done it sometime anyway... just my opinion.

There's a difference IMO between (a) alerting prospective owners to the possibility of odometer tampering, and (b) providing a veritable "how-to guide" on exactly how to go about it and where to find vendor sources for equipment for that purpose.

What's next - posts on "how to steal an NSX"?

Again (I know that arguing with Ken is a lost cause...) I think (I, me) that people wanting to fraud possible buyers knows how easy this is. I also think (I, is again me) that honest people DO NOT know how easy this really is. It is one click away and 15 minute installation time away from this thread. That's it.

We had a case of fraud like this that happened (see yesterday's post) and everybody was shocked. If Lud prefer the discussion to be removed sice he thinks that it may be dangerous and deviate people, let him delete it.

Ken, I will never show anyone how to do this, I am meerly stating that it can be done, and always, ALWAYS check every source you can, CARFAX, Acura Records, Title Mileage, any resource you can get access to.

< rant >

I do not condone this, its wrong. But everyone should be aware if its never crossed your mind before. It is out there, and does happen, but 99% of the time the ppl are honest and there is no worry of it. But there is always that 1% in the world that make it bad for the rest of us good ppl.

After reading all of the horror stories (myself included) on this board alone, I think the number of dishonest people is a lot greater than 1%.

Remember, there may be many many transactions among honest people, but you never hear about them, because they never get posted.

If the odometer had been disconected, (there are a couple different ways to do this which we will not get into), you would never know. But, the check engine light will come on with most disconections. (depends on which route you take). You'll have to reset your computer to clear the light. As Lud noted, the NSX odometer is driven by a motor in the instrument cluster. So changing the ecu will not affect anything as far as that goes. With our other Acura models that ARE totaly electronic, the memory is in the instrument cluster not the ECU.
