Buying a '99 in Chicago - Anyone know this Targa?

To Ken and other windy city locals, I'm buying a black/black 99 targa this week from a local Acura dealer in Highland Park Illinois. I'm out of state, hence the post to the board.

The sales guy, who has been pretty sharp thus far, said the previous owner of the car traded it in last week and picked up a new 2002 targa. He also said that was their third 2002 to go out the door this year, which caused my "bullshit detector" to begin emitting loud Valentine One-like warning chirps.

Does anyone know this owner or particular car? It's only got 14,500 miles and isn't modded in any way. Carfax clean.

I have no clue regarding the Highland Park Acura dealer's size, but my sales guy over there says they own a Honda dealership in addition to the Acura dealership , as well as to two other brands.

FINAL NOTE - If Ken or anyone else that lives close by to that particular dealership wants to do me the favor of taking a look at the car for paint work, feel free.

It's being sold under Acura's Certified Pre-Owned cars program, and at 14,500 miles I'd be surprised if something was wrong. But I'm wondering why anyone would take a massive $$$ loss on their 1999 NSX-T just to purchase a revised 2002 NSX-T at full sticker?

Any help is appreciated, and if you don't feel comfortable speaking here publically don't hesistate to private me at [email protected]

Best, MAKO

I've been using Pauly Acura (Highland Park IL) for NSX service since 1998, and I believe their Service folks to be pretty good, and a reasonable value given their location. They've actually helped me do third-party inspections for potential buyers, and have helped spot 'bad' deals in the past.

Their SALES folks are helpful and pretty restrained -- at least with the NEW cars. I do not have experience buying USED from them.

Re: the '02 sales -- I am aware of them selling at least 2 so far.

I've seen this car (late model black/black T) on their showroom floor, and it looks clean, at least from a distance.

I'll be by there later this week, and can help check out this car if necessary -- let me know ([email protected])

There are nine Acura dealers in the Chicago area. Pauly Acura is one of two that do a lot of NSX sales and service (Muller's Woodfield Acura in Hoffman Estates is the other). It's quite possible that they may have sold three 2002 NSXs. I've had quite a bit of contact with them, and in general they have been reasonably straightforward, although their prices tend to be slightly higher than elsewhere.

If it's being sold as certified, I wouldn't have any concerns about the car. This means that it carries a warranty in the event of any problems. I'll let Manuel go ahead and look it over for you; no sense in both of us doing so.

I'm wondering why anyone would take a massive $$$ loss on their 1999 NSX-T just to purchase a revised 2002 NSX-T at full sticker?

My best guess: Because they can.

EDIT: Revised to reflect Manuel's offer to look it over.

Thanks for the heads up Ken and Manuel, it's amazing that any single dealer has possibly moved three 2002s so quickly. But with the close proximity to Barrington and other wealthy Chi-town suburbs I guess it's not THAT shocking.

Concerning the car's inspection: Manuel you've got mail.

Just chatted with the dealer, and have the history on this vehicle. I'll share this with MAKO privately.

Quick summary:
- some damage earlier (car hit curb)
- repairs done by the best body shop in town (The Last Detail)
- great condition

If anyone else is interested, please contact me at [email protected]

Actually, the Highland Park dealer is close to the wealthy North Shore suburbs, but so are the dealers in Glenview and Libertyville, which don't do much NSX business. The other dealer that does, in Hoffman Estates, is the closest one to Barrington.
