Broken Catalytic Bolts - how can I fix these?

So instead of reading all the info about how tight, rusted and stuborn these bolts get, I just went and tried to loosen them without any chemical assistance (silly me).

I loosened them to a point to which it would not torque any further. I tried to apply as much torque as possible and literally torqued off the bolt at the nut!

So now I have a few broken bolts on my cats. The 6 bolts actually look like they were hammered into place. What is the best way to repair these? Could I hammer these bolts out and put new ones in? Anyone know what type and where I can get them?

Thanks for the help.

Yes you can hammer them out. You will need to remove the shields, so get some PBBlaster and let the shield hardware set a bit. USE 6 POINT SOCKETS ONLY, you will need a 10mm and a 12mm for the shield hardware.

Replacement studs for the cats are:

18176-P08-003

List is $10.25

You can call JR at Ray Laks Acura 1-888-729-5257 25% NSXCA discount and only $3.95 handling charge, free shipping.

Punch them out and get new ones at the dealer 18176-P08-003 about $11 each list. When I had my converters off I replaced all 12 even though I only broke 2. Let me know if you need new nuts the ones used are a smaller hex then what you will find at the hardware store and I bought a box of 100 so I have a few left.

LarryB / Briank,

Thanks so much for the quick reply! Can't believe those bolts are $10 a pop!

Brian, Let me know how many nuts you have left and how much you want for them. I'll need 12 but I don't mind buying a few extra just in case.

Is there anything I can do to coat these after installation like an anti-seize agent, etc? or is it just a lost cause and use PBBlaster next time? Thanks again!

Garrick, you MIGHT want to check your local Pepboys to see if they have replacement studs. I was surprised to see that they carried the very high grade replacement nuts. They come in 4 packs. Not sure if you have PepBoys out in Toronto but I'm sure you have some sort of equivalent. Just make sure you buy the high grade stuff like Grade 10. I think I found grade 8 nuts at the Osh hardware store and passed on them. Exhaust shops might also have the studs on hand.

An application of anti-seize is on exhaust fasteners is never a bad idea. I should have about 80 of those nuts on hand so if you want to paypal me like $10 for 20 of them I can get them in the mail but I would hit up the dealer if you buy the studs local you may be able to get them to through them in on the deal.
