batteryminder question

After extensive research, I've decided to go with the "batteryminder" to charge my battery. Now is it safe to connect the red prong to the positive and the black prong to the battery's ground? It states in the manual that the ground prong should be attached to the vehicle's chassis.

I'm really confused at this point due to my battery dying after following the manual.

How do you guys hook up the battery chargers??

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Any help from the ""battery tender" users would also be appreciated.

I connect my battery trickle charger through the cigarrette lighter outlet. You can buy the plug from Radio Shack. The key must be in the "accessory" position during charging.

Maclife...

(Where are you in MD? I just left there a couple of years ago, from Harford Co...)

Anyway, the "connect to chassis" issue is for safety... The last connection made should always be ground cable to chassis on the dead battery car. Reason being it avoids ANY possibility of a spark near a battery which could conceivably be leaking vapors.

Get a battery "maintainer" or "tender". This is different from a battery charger. A maintainer is designed to be connected to the battery for a long period of time and automatically shuts off when the battery is charged. It 'maintains' the battery at peak charge. I mounted my battery maintainer on the wall of my garage and have a quick disconnect socket conntctor just inside the front hood, wired directly to the battery. I also have a 3A fuse at the positive terminal just in case a wire would short or rub through.

If I'm not going to drive my car for a few days, I just raise the hood, and plug the mating connectors together. I can close the hood, but not the whole way. I just have to remember not to forget its hooked up and drive away. but if I did, the connectors would simply pull apart.

I had a plug type connector hard wired to the battery but did not like that much, have clipped to the battery terminals directly but its hard to get to them with the spare tire in place. Lately I connect positive inside the front fuse box and the negative to any convenient bare metal. The guard for the ALB unit works well.

I have a fancy Pulsetec battery maintainer but after a couple of months the battery was near dead. Ended up it was so weak it could not over come the 35mA drain that is normal in the NSX. Since then I have went to my old stand by 6 amp charger running off a Intermatic timer set to be on for 1 hour a day.

Battery Tender

I bought mine at Harbor Freight for $13. I cut off the clamps and installed round terminal connectors directly to the battery cable bolts. Tie wrapped the transformer to the spare tire mounting bracket and plug it in when the car sits for long periods. Went through a battery a year before using this, works great.

Yea! Lets hear it for Harbor Freight. Mines going on 1 1/2 yrs and still going strong.:D
