I have recently imported a 94 NSX to BC and had it sitting during the winter. Since the vehicle is more than 15 years old, it is exempt from RIV. When I went to get insurance for the car, the insurance agent told me although I didn’t have to do the federal inspection, I will still need to do a provincial inspection.

My question is, with provincial inspection, am I required to get DRLs on my nsx? Cause I do not want pay for the inspection to find out for that I fail it because I don’t have DRLs on. I was told be the border services that I didn’t need to do ANY inspections or modification to the vehicle and I can just walk straight into autoplan to get my insurance. That’s why I am confuse.

Please help!!

Thank you very much!!

All vehicles from outside BC need a PVI (Provincial Vehicle Inspection) to be licensed and insured (other Provinces or the USA). This is a mechanical inspection to insure the vehicle is "road worthy". DRL's should not be a part of this inspection. BCAA is licensed to do PVI's. I used them when I brought my Accord wagon into BC from the USA. Many mechanical garages are also licensed to do the PVI's (and some dealers too).

I think the above is correct. But you can always call your local Canadian Tire to confirm what's involved with the provincial inspection. When I moved here many moons ago, my then 2-year-old Integra, which was purchased in Saskatoon, still had to be inspected before I could register it here in BC.

Technically, they don't inspect for DRL's. But I heard of some people failing because of not having DRL's. As ex-r-wagon said, they are supposed to be inspecting for "road worthy" vehicles, and some inspectors will say DRL is a must in Canada, so you have to have it, blah, blah, blah. But I guess you can argue it. It's a hit and miss.

For provincial inspection, they are supposed to be thorough. They check your brakes, suspension, tires, condition of car and engine, etc. If you have mismatched tires, make sure they all have the same speed rating, and that it is at least the same speed rating or higher than oem tires. I know people who failed because of that.

I believe all out-of-province vehicles must be inspected. In a lot of aspect, this out-of-province inspection is tougher than the federal inspection. I imported a '94 (with only 22k miles) last year, I have to replace all tires and have DRL installed (didn't feel like to argue, and I wanted DRL anyway).

I am not sure of BCs laws but here in Manitoba yes the car must have DRLs. Every car in the province that is 1989 or newer must have DRLs. This may be a federal law?

Yep, it's a federal law. All vehicles made or imported after Jan.01/1990. So if you import a 1988 car, you will have to add DRL to pass inspection.

Easiest solution for this case is to call up the inspection facility you want to bring it to, and ask if they require DRL. Simple and easy. I'm sure Canadian Tire would require it, as they do Federal Inspections as well.

DRLs are required for all vehicles from 1989 on.
Provincial Inspection will most likely check for them.
I wouldn't want to skip this, as Canadians are used to seeing the light on all the time and may not see you without them.
Here is how:

thx for all the response guys!! i called my local dealer (richmond acura) and they quoted me approx $800 for DRL prior to the provincial inspection <(@__o``)> quite pricey although i don't mind it if it gets done right.

however that being said, thank you very much warren for you post too, i will try to DIY it with a tech friend and see if that works cause on yours it likes fantastic!!!

as far as the provincial inspection, i think i'll see if i have any connections with local shops that care certified to do it!!

$800 is way too much to install DRL imo. Acura dealers will always try to gouge you. PM Angus and see if he can install it for you. Should be a lot cheaper.

+1 $800.00 !!!!
I can do it for $10.00 in parts and 1 hour labor. If it was a civic they would charge you $200.00. and still make $100 in profit!

Warren's setup is good to get the job done. Cheap and easy install. Shouldn't run into any problems. Other option is to buy driving lights and install them. I would just go with Warren's setup.
