Are there any OEM HID lights for NSX?

Hello Everyone,

I'm new to the forum. I'm seriously considering buying a 91-96 NSX.

One thing I'm really picky about is good headlights. Sort of anal about it all. Some of the best HID lights I've ever seen are on the S2000. Extremely bright, very good and even beam pattern, and doesn't glare when coming at me or coming up behind me.

Can anyone tell me if the NSX has ever had (except for the last couple years) OEM HID lights anywhere in the world market?

Thanks.

David

This brings up a good question. I too love the S2000's headlights. Are the lights on the S2000 similar to the 02+ NSX? I just love that crisp blue coming from the S2000.

you wont get good lighting out of the 91-01 nsx headlights because the glass projector shields are iron filled glass and cuts out an enormous amount of light.

how do i know?

i used the same exact HID kit in my 02 headlamps and the 91 projectors and theres a huge clarity difference in clear polycarbonate and iron filled glass.

What do you mean by "iron filled glass"? Even though I am an optometrist and know a lot about lighting, I've never heard that term.

Anyway, when I was asking about OEM HID's, what my plan is, is to replace the whole assembly with OEM HID's from somewhere else in the world (if they exist that is). Except of course England and Japan.

I have rarely seen any HID retrofit aftermarket kits that offer a good beam pattern.

I really love my S2000's HIDs. Would 4300K HIDs in my '91 NSX appear similar (I know the NSX's projectors were designed for halogens--so they won't appear exactly the same)?

The only OEM HIDs for the NSX are from the '02-05, and they require that you replace (or otherwise fabricate) the hood and front end.

However, this aftermarket kit is as good as you can do using the stock housing units.

Nope. There are factory HIDs available in Japan for the flip-ups, but they have a RHD beam pattern.

Maybe not by your definition, but you are WORLDS better than the stock halogens. I went with a 4100K HIDonline (phillips) kit and it works as well as my previous E46BMW and quite a bit better than my 02 GS430 stock HIDs.

To the OP, my vote is to get a 9006 , low color (higher usable light output) retrofit kit and place the ballast in side the headlight basket. See here.

Some more relevant reading is here.

The retrofit is better than nothing.......I see a bigger improvement in lighting already over stock.......

Secondly if you have the money I remember one guy on here did a retrofit on the pop up headlights with an s2000 projector and replaced the lens. But he paid almost $3k for getting that done......

last thing you can do is do the 2002+ conversion........

Erick- good seeing you on the highway a few days ago.....anyways are you going to ever get that polycarbonate lens for us?

eddie,
good to see you around too. you need to drive your NSX more often and enjoy it.

i keep forgetting about that project.
i do have a set of pop-up projectors and i will remove the glass shield and do a comparison how much better the light is with the glass and without.

Awesome can't wait to see it......put me in to getting a pair if it works out good......

My lens look like they need replacing anyways....

Oh yeah that was my 4 door secret nsx conversion

What's up Eddie?^^^^^^^^^

I have WhiteNSX's HID kit. I believe I have the 6k lum. The s2k has 4300k. The 4300k, when compared side by side to the 6k, looks like it has a bit of yellow in it when warmed up. The 6k is super white with no yellow. There is no constant blue or purple color, which was something I didn't want.

I too wanted to replicate the s2k's beam. If I had to do it again I'd go with 4300k. It doesn't look too aftermarket.

Whats up Simon! Yeah I am glad I got the 4300k HID....just waiting on Erick to get the new lenses out and see if there is much improvement.....I have a feeling it will  so hurry Erick....my car needs new contacts

David,

Any retrofit HID kit is a marked improvement over stock. I've installed whiteNSX's 6000k HID kit (above link), and it's much brighter than stock.

If I were to do it again, however, I would buy different bulbs. Instead of whiteNSX's McCulloch 6000k bulbs, I'd install Philips Ultinon 6000k bulbs. I like the color better. Here's a side by side shot of my car next to Malibu Rapper's car comparing the two: http://www.nsxprime.com/forums/showthread.php?t=56809

Erick (evof575gtc) also sells an HID kit. It's affordable and, from pics and vids that he's posted, look very bright: http://www.nsxprime.com/forums/showthread.php?t=75052
I didn't get a chance to compare Erick's HIDs to mine before he went with an '02 front end conversion. But I have seen his HIDs on his car in its current configuration, and they look very good.

So no OEM HID's for 91's thru 01's anywhere in the world market?

Yes, in Japan there were OEM HID for the '91-'01 headlights, but they drive on the other side of the road, so the beam pattern is reversed from the U.S., and can't be used here.

Go to www.hid-online.com. I bought a 6000K HID Kit from them about 4 years ago on the original site, www.autolamps-online.com, for an NSX I owned and the kit was great. The wiring harness was made specifically for the NSX, and the ballasts & bulbs are top quality & name brand parts... Not the cheapest kit, but the best kit that I have seen... Made my NSX look 10 times better at night... One of the best mods I had done to my previous NSX... It will also be one of the first mods I do to an NSX that I will hopefully be buying in the next couple of weeks...

BTW, They offer free expedited shipping on kits that they sell worldwide, as they are in Europe...

Did you get just the low beam kit or both the low and high beam kit? Are both really needed... or is just the low beam adequate?? Thanks.

As was stated in the previous post to mine, you just need the low beam kit... Unless you use your high beam's alot... Which if you do, that would be weird...

I am currently using JDM OEM HID RHD headlights (4300k) on my 93 NSX. I did align the HID (low only) beam little bit lower so they won't hit on-coming drivers. Other than that they work great and give me perfect beam cut.

Are the JDM OEM headlights different in terms of hardware (projectors designed for HIDs instead of halogens)? If possible, can you post pictures? Thanks!

Yes, they are different, and designed specifically for HID and RHD. No matter how low you aim them, the beam pattern is still incorrect for LHD. If aimed low enough, sure, it might not hit oncoming traffic, but at the same time, you severly limit the range of the lights. It might be possible to flip the shield in the projector to get the proper beam pattern, but not having opened one up yet, that's an unknown at this point.

JDM OEM HID pop-up headlights are completely different from OEM halogen pop-up headlights. You basically need to replace everthing including both headlight housings.

Here is the list of Honda parts:
1) JDM HID Headlights (HID low-beam & halogen high-beam) right & left
2) Igniter x 2
3) Ballaster x 2

HID wiring is different from halogen one's so you have to wire them right to get both HID (low) and high beams work. I will try to get pictures posted soon.
